The portable induction hob is brilliant and it will boil a litre of water in half the time it takes on the gas hob. We used a 4 element version for about 4 years in our last home and have a similar one ready to go in our new apartment.

You just need to try a magnet on the base of your pots. If the magnet sticks - They are good for induction cooking.

This one is a tricky one, of the most commonly known grades 316 stainless has virtually no ferrous iron in it so a magnet won't stick. 304 is the other commonly known grade and a magnet will stick to that. Some stainless steel will start out with no properties that a magnet will be attracted to but as it work hardens it will develop slight magnetic attraction. It was a real bugga during the stainless steel exhaust craze of the '80 and 90's, the stuff that made good exhaust pipe also attracted a magnet, the stuff that didn't would often develop properties that attracted a magnet after a few yrs of heating and cooling and we'd get irate customers screaming they'd been ripped off and we had used cheaper material. Didn't matter how many papers you produced, the bloke at the pub or the work lunch room knew about this stuff and you were all full of B/S.
But back to the magnet test and induction cook tops, if a magnet will stick then it will work on an induction cook top no matter what the surface finish looks like, that includes ceramic coated cookware.

Up to you Vik, maybe you can do a bulk deal and sell all the pots and pans with the house and make enough to afford new pots and pans and solar and batteries .... or you could build a fire outside each night and cook on that, save on gas as well  You might actually get a use for all those charcoal burners you have collected over the yrs and even start making your own wood gas to run the fridge and use as a supplement fuel for the diesel engine to save a few quid there too, and vent the chimney through the Avida and use that for heating to save using the diesel heater ..... got this all sorted, should I start pulling the stuff back off? ;)

Just about finished building the slide out battery tray etc. I think next week looks to be job free, well sort of anyway, so I should be able to get a bit more done.
