Bernie, Is it a copper mine in the Flinders Ranges SA. I remember something about the Cornish Copper miners cutting down all the trees around the district for the boilers, and then the (now wild) goats denuded everything. I think they told us that story whilst travelling through that area on the Ghan a few years ago. Don't know the name of the mine though.

Yep, that's the one in Burra.
Went up there last week, interesting history up there.

The one at Burra I found really interesting, again Cornish miners.
The Cornish Beam engine especially interested me.
250Hp from the single cylinder used to pump the water from the bottom of the mine.

Spot on Bob,the old bridge over the Genoa river,has been restored and is now a walking path into Genoa from the the old caravan park that now is the free camp(great place).......Peter

Great to hear the bridge has been restored and open for use. That was the spot I was thinking of but I remember the bridge being closed off so a rather dangerous walk along the side of the road to get to the village.
