It's more like a tree with a very wide base these days Bruce. Those are tree trunks sticking out the top now and they had developed branches before we left, they have probably started developing branches of their own by now. It's most definitely a chainsaw job now, forget about a hedge trimmer ......

IWhen I was 46, bought a bus that was completely worn out. Spent 4-5 years underneath it working on all the mechanicals which included the motor and gear box. Then the fit out. It's signed off, registered and notified.

The bus is now 53 years old. I'm always tinkering. It's my hobby.

My philosophy is to fix it once and in a controlled fashion. I don't want the worry about breakdowns when away.

My next big project is the diff. That will be May-June next year.

On our trips, the worst breakdown has delayed us 1.5 days. I've chickened out on one trip by myself due to an unknown gearbox noise.

The bus has travelled 4 ks shy of 40,000 kilometres. I'm pretty happy with that. Tassy, Uluru, Parkes, Nullarbor, Mundi and local Victorian trips.

This trip coming, will be the longest.

I'm 63 now. Retired 5 years.

Somehow have to weave a big lap discussion at hope soon.... or WA Coast.
I guess the difference is, you have a home and homelife you need to return to, Margaret and I don't for at least the next 2 yrs.
If the Winnie needs a repair on the side of the road to get it to the next convenient place to do a more serious repair if needed, we are home anyway, and we have a vehicle to get parts or supplies as needed, so we are actually stranded on the side of the road, more delayed in our travels.

I guess it depends on circumstance and mind frame, a mechanical issue isn't big thing or a deal breaker for me, just one of those things that are part of life ...... I was p*ssed about what we paid for the Fuso, only to have a lot fixing to do, then it burning to the ground anyway .... but at least the insurance money paid enough for us to buy another motorhome and enough left over to do some upgrades ..... still have some of that left over .... well in theory, a wife and a credit balance in a joint account doesn't mean the credit remains for long

The latest set back, the MG4 charger has decided it has had enough after attempting to water cool itself .... with zero success. Pulled it apart and dried it out, but no such luck, cost us $25 at a fast charger yesterday afternoon .... those Ampol EV charges are expensive ..... we will be avoiding those in future

I reckon if you work it out to cents per kilometre then it's not real bad. I can fill up the Jimny for $25 but not the Winny.
Cheers

8,500 kms on the clock now at an EV charger cost of $36 I think is the tally so far .... but still a shock when it's been free most of the time ;) 8-)
