Maybe a dugout for the troops to sleep in, so the cold / hot wind didn't blow on them while resting. At a now disused training facility out in the sticks.
How are we doing now?

Really warm now!
For troops, but not for sleeping, or wind protection.
Spot-on about a disused training facility.
Now WHERE are they, and WHAT were they used for?
Think.
Outdoors, about 6ft long, 2ft wide and 1ft~18" deep, lined with bitumen.
:? Why the lining?
