Lady, our Jack RusselX was desexed in January this year when in Tassie and the honest Vet advised that she did not need a vaccination as since 2009, the Professional Guidelines indicated that to avoid unnecessary deaths from over vaccination, Vaccinations should only be done once per three years. Choice have an article here http://www.choice.com.au/reviews-and-te ... ation.aspx and that the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (who control what gardeners can put on tomatoes or what chemicals can be used in a swimming pool) are trying to get medicine labeling to show three year vaccinations.
Having accepted the advise we are now confronted with a Boarding Kennel that says NO Boarding, Annual vaccination required. There was some qualification (e.g. outside School Hols might be ok)
Are you aware the advice from Authorities has changed? (I guess Vets are in no hurry to change their source of income)
Will you continue to vaccinate every Year, or change to every 3 years?
How do we educate the effected Boarding Kennels to the changes, or should they still require yearly vaccinations?

When we travelled with our 3 boys we had the necessary vacs just incase but when home NO vacs because after a few yrs they had built immunity but pavo and kennel cough is a real nasty killer so for peace of mind when travelling yes to vacs.. Our vet charges less than half the normal vets fees as he wants all people to have their pets guarded against those nasties.

Pavo and Kennel Cough are part of the C3 Vaccination and only required once every 3 years.

Shall be asking some questions of the local vets when we get home but when I lived in NZ my vet told me that after my dogs got to around 4 yrs old they really only needed pavo & KC. When I came to Oz with my 4 Dobes I once again gave them 2 yrs straight of the C5 to top them up especially for travelling here there and in between.. I agree vets do make the most of the $$$ to be made from over vaccinating, bit like the Dr's and their over prescribing AB's, sleeping pills, antidepressants etc etc.. Where there is a buck to be made.. Now do I have my annual fluvax or not??

In Tassie we get by with an annual C3 and the boarding kennels do require proof.
Apart from that, an occasional Drontal for the worms.
No fleas or ticks.

When we head north, it's C5 and Proheart as well as regular dosing with Frontline for the ticks.
I just spent a small fortune stocking up for the upcoming trip.
We have to prove we gave them Drontal 2 weeks before returning to Tassie.

Pets are costing more than kids these days, but they are well worth it eh. Used to be the other way around not that long ago....40 years or so.

The AVA issued a revised policy stating that in most cases core vaccines need not be administered any more frequently than triennially, or even less so under certain circumstances, such as if your pet is kept inside and less likely to come into contact with these viruses.

Self regulation surely is not working.
