Broome!
Broome!
A couple of weeks ago I left Perth, where I was visiting two nieces, one who'd just arrived from Scotland where she is now living. My daughter joined me as she seriously wanted to visit Karijini. She is very good at trip planning and soon worked out an itinerary that would take us through New Norcia on our way to Exmouth to swim with the whale sharks before going to Karijini: It meant we had to drive some pretty big distances in a short order (her time was limited), but we also had two drivers now.
New Norcia was way beyond my expectations! I thought it would be a mission church in a town, but rather, the Mission is the town! We took the guided tour, which was excellent. We stayed overnight there to get the morning sun, which favours photo taking of the main features.
Then to Exmouth - swimming with whale sharks is quite an amazing experience! We were on a tour boat that also had researchers on board so learned quite a lot, plus we were able to swim with four different whale sharks. We also saw humpback whales, a marlin and snorkeled over Ningaloo Reef.
Then on to Karijini, where we roamed through spectacular gorges, swam on pools and saw as much as we could in the four days there - and it was a lot!
After dropping her off, I made my way north toward Port Hedland and along the way saw a car broken down and an Aboriginal waving his arm. I stopped and he informed me they had been there two days: They ran out of petrol and they'd obtained some but now the battery was flat. We connected jumper leads, meanwhile a couple of stockmen also stopped to help. As it turned out, the engine immobilizer had been set off. They worked out the car needed transport to a mechanic, and one of the stockmen mentioned Indee Station, '..just 30 or 40 km up the road'. I agreed to stop at Indee Station to see if they could send a vehicle transporter (the car was an automatic and couldn't be towed without causing serious transmission damage, apparently). Indee Station couldn't help, so they rang the Police and informed them of the situation. Meanwhile I discovered Indee Station has a caravan park so I stayed there for two very interesting days.
Continuing on, I intended to stop at Cape Keraudren, but a large sign at the turnoff informed me "4WD Only Beyond This Point" so I continued on to Stanley Rest Area. I arrived at Broome yesterday and was fortunate to see the Ladder to the Moon last nite - quite an interesting phenomena! Broome is a fascinating town (city?) and today I will again tour the town. The travels are going well, and I wish all safe and happy travels!
