At least they know where their phones and credit cards are now, not like they were stolen and someone using them illegally. A lesson all involved will not forget in a hurry, the blame game will be in full swing but in the end, no one was killed and tad of inconvenience is about the worst of it.

They're backpackers, a lot of them types don't think, just expect. You see this all the time if you have anything to do with tourists and especially backpackers, many are pretty senseless and rarely think about what they are doing or the consequences of their actions. Even if the ramp were up and there were wheel restraints, it's always the best idea to make sure your vehicle won't move, when being transported on water.
Have seen it a few time when on the ferry from Tas to Vic, for some reason people leave their vehicle out of gear and no handbrake and have to be called back to make it secure because it is moving around and the ship has just left port.

Back packers wouldn't care, probably only a rental car, not their worry.

So how do you know that it would not hold?Barboots wrote:No point using one which doesn't hold [emoji1]Jim wrote:No handbrake holds if you don't put it on correctly.Barboots wrote:Toyota handbrake.
BTW, Toyota do not make handbrakes. Like most brands of vehicle they only fit them.

Might save a bit of argy bargy (excuse the pun) if the facts surrounding the incident are read.

Had three LandCruisers and four more in the family. Crap handbrakes the lot, except for a few thousand kays from service. First bog-hole kills them immediately too.
Toyota owners don't like when the jokes go their way, and irrespective of the report this one is fair game. Take your turn...

You've had 3 and 4 more in family? Obviously someone does love Toyotas!Barboots wrote:Had three LandCruisers and four more in the family. Crap handbrakes the lot, except for a few thousand kays from service. First bog-hole kills them immediately too.

We have 3 land cruisers, the hand brakes can be bad but all of ours work well. The sahara has the worst one, no matter how much I adjust or change things, it still doesn't work as well as the two cruisers, which have excellent hand brakes.
The reason we stick with the cruisers are, cheap and readily available parts, which you can get anywhere in the country. Plus they run excellently on veggie oil, one has done over 700000klms and still goes strong and the turbo sahara was rebuilt after 650000 when it developed a turbo problem and needed the injectors done, so decided to fully rebuild, including the iP.

Brake shoes are still the only truly efficient and effective hand brake only because the have the friction surface area and a hand brake isn't heat effected as it is applied when stationary so no friction generating heat, just friction acting between the two surfaces to hold the drum stationary.
But that still doesn't cover the neglect by all parties involved resulting in the 4WD falling off the barge

You kidding? Do you think that they rented it for free? Doubt it. Hopefully they did take out insurance cover.JohnM wrote:Back packers wouldn't care, probably only a rental car, not their worry.
