We own a pommy built 7.2 motorhome, built on a Peugeot chassis.Had a bit of a set back climbing a long incline coming back from the South Island, the van gave a bit of a botty cough and slowed for a fraction of a second and carried on, So we stopped and had a look under the lid . as you would, nothing! We started off and there was this noise, sounded like tappet ,s to me. We started off again and the faster we went the noise went away.Got home ok and visited the mechanic, injecters said he, well pulled and sent away , Came back 3 not bad but not good, 1 buggered. Had to send to UK for parts. $800 later noise still there.Took Vehicle to Peugeot specialist in Auckland. Cant find the fault after all checks done, motors got to come out. Shit!!!!!!$$$$$$. Anyway prognosis is no 4 cylinder has over heated and buggered the piston and bore. No Parts available NZ or OZ. That word again $$$$$$$. parts have come come from 3 different countries . Still arriving after a couple of months.. So in for pistons, sleeves.new injectors , gaskets and all the bits and pieces that go with it. Projected cost around
$12,000.... :( :(

Norman, I was going to say s**t, but I won't, I'll say 'strike a light' instead as I am trying to cut down on my swearing.
Nearly the same thing happened to a friends diesel BMW. Except for the hard to get bit. Everything from a European car is priced out of this world.
Good luck, I hope that it all turns out OK.

Ouch!!
One of our mates here in the marina (Chris & Judy) also own one of them Norman & has a very similar story as yours.
He'll be here this weekend if you'd like me to ask him anything. :)
Will the Iveco motor fit? lol.

Converter it to electric, the island is small enough to make it from one end to the other on a single charge, maybe even back home again. For the $$ to rebuild a European diesel you can set up a very nice electric conversion and pay next to nothing for fuel once the job is done.
Just thank your lucky star it wasn't a Honda, cheaper to rebuild a Rolls Royce than a Honda. The joys of owning a high tech diesel, when they go wrong they do it in a big way. The fancier they are the more it costs when they go bang.

As far as the knock/rattle, common diesel stuff, the failed injector washed the oil off the walls of the bore, no oil and the piston grabbed, tore bits of it till it couldn't grab any more and the slopping piston in the bore rattles.

Bloke pulled up into Coober Pedy.

Same sort of rattle. Reckons he got a load of bad fuel a while ago.... Even though it changed the filters, it died.

These common rail engines need very clean fuel.

Feck ;) ;) me as Mrs Brown would say. Leave the keys in the van and have a trip to Auckland (near the airport) and go out for a meal.

"tanks" here---I recall the engine rebuild on my Iveco due to similar noises in the motor. The cost was around $23,000 plus solicitor fees and court fees, so consider T-1 Terrys advise mate, or scrap it and sell the parts on e-bay and buy a replacement vehicle.
