Birdsville's smelly water 'safe' to drink

The Diamantina Shire Council says the water supply at Birdsville in far south-west Queensland is safe to drink, despite a strong sulphur-like odour.

Council spokesman Trevor Stewart says work is underway to reseal two reservoir tanks in the town, which have been damaged due to the heat of the bore water coming from underground.

He says the tanks have been taken offline while the upgrade work is being completed and that is causing the water to smell.

"The sulphur content in most western towns that have hot bores is very high, so you get the bad smell because it is not aerated," he said.

"The tanks will be offline until the end of the first week in May.
