Got down and dirty with George today
Headed off to Mannum around lunch time waited for the bus motor to cool down sufficiently enough for us to get instructions from Mr Terry before starting our unscrew fest.
Finished the day with all the exhaust manifold studs out bar 2 that were not there at all and 3 that have broken off. Tomorrow we are back to Mannum and that is where Terry comes into play with his expertise with the welder. Then we are to begin putting things back
. I wonder how many left over things we shall have?

Re: What did you do to your rig today?
I'll try with the mig first as the trigger control makes it easier to control the arc. I could try the TIG as well I suppose but localised heat in the stud but not in the cast iron head is the aim so TIG might not be the go. The ultimate aim is the get the remaining stud bit red hot and extended out far enough to weld a nut on to it, then let it cool and wind it out. The advantage here is the studs shear off due to constant stretching rather than shearing off from over tightening and the stud bottoming out, so once the stud bit expands and then contracts the rust should have broken away from the thread allowing the piece to screw out...... fingers crossed anyway. The very back stud is going the be the hardest as there is no clear sight of it making welding onto it a tad tricky.jon_d wrote:Terry, do you use a MIG or a stick for stus?

Re: What did you do to your rig today?
The catch is getting the first drill hole dead centre because if it doesn't come out the hole will need to be enlarged enough to re-tap the thread in the hole to remove the last of the old stud. The next 2 problems are avoiding expanding the broken stud with the easi-out as it is a left hand thread tapered tool, the other one is snapping the easi-out in the stud, they are made of a harder metal than a high speed drill bit requiring a tungsten steel drill bit and they are both expensive and hard to work with generally requiring a bench set up.Mrcoolabah1au wrote:Would drilling a hole in the stud to Ezi out the thread later ?

George's job sounds easier than Terry's.
I'm just re-balancing some batteries... ready for the Easter trip.
