Outback travellers get inside track to old route

Post by Kit Kat »

An outback Queensland council says the reopening of the 'inside' Birdsville Track will give travellers an alternative.

The Diamantina Shire Council says the 145-kilometre section of the track has reopened for the first time in several years.

Council spokesman Trevor Stewart says while it is a shorter route, it will take longer to drive than the main track.

He says dry conditions have enabled authorities to grade the road for vehicles.

"The inside Birdsville Track is one of the tracks that leads from Marree to Birdsville, which starts at Clifton Hills," he said.

"When there is flooding it puts that track out but at Goyder's Lagoon the water has disappeared there which usually blocks the traffic from coming through.

"It is not a 100-kilometre an hour road but around the 70 kilometres an hour you could travel at and you will get there safely."

He says has been shut for a few years due to the big rains we had in Queensland.

If that's the same road that passes near Innamincka & the DIG tree, we did it in a SWB Coaster years ago.
Had to straddle the deep ruts of the cattle road trains!
Didn't see any sign of human habitation for two days until Birdsville.
Good to know it's re-opened, but we won't take Girt over it. :?
Regards & God bless,
