Hume highway then right onto the M80 ring road is a very easy run so you could camp a reasonable distance out.
We stayed in Wodonga (In one of those unmentionable places) on the last 2 trips and had an easy run in both times.

When we are coming down the Hume we stay at the BP service centre at Wanan Wanan about 60Ks from Melbourne.

Have been told there is another service centre at Craigieburn that you can stop o/n at but we have not tried that one.

Sorry, age is getting to me! Yes it should have been "near" Wallan Wallan but on the Highway.

We have stopped at that BP service centre a couple of times and would be happy to do it again. No problems, just keep out of the way of the trucks.

There are a few nice free camps in the Mt Disapointment area, maybe an hour from Wallan. "Andersons Garden" springs to mind
