A Cautionary Tale
It appears thin slices of green wood to not take kindly to being left out in the weather...

Re: A Cautionary Tale
I used to always coat the end grains with a protection coat. Did at one time have the roper sealer but finished up just using plastic paint. Any old scraps and just lay it on thick.
Went into the container at T1's the other day and fund a lot of my timber that I have carried from QLD. Selected some to try and make a few bowls etc for Margaret. Not sure what they are now but there was Purple Gidgee and Black Wattle in some of it as well as some large bowl blanks about 2 ft across and about 4 inches thick as well as a large slab and lots of small burls.
Need to finish my jobs and see if I cant resurrect the big lathe or cut them up for some small items using the little Woodfast.
Miss my turning

Re: A Cautionary Tale
Brian,
I'm jealous of your wood collection...I have mainly Black Wattle, after helping a neighbour remove a large one which the Council told him to remove, as it was overhanging the footpath. That was over 10 years ago. The should be dry enough to turn now.
Also have a few odd fragments of Jarrah & WA Red Gum (not the same as Murray River Redgum) which really has red gum — picked up (literally, offcuts from the floor!) on a visit to a WA timber mill. I was once given a small branch from a Gidgee... turned it into half-a-dozen pens for Christmas gifts (kept one
).
The scrap I posted was just a slice trimmed from a log piece when we had a (mostly) deceased tree removed from the back yard & cut to fireplace-sized lengths....
The remains are either in the logpile ready to be consumed (dead bits) or drying in the back shed in preparation for next winter (green bits).

Re: A Cautionary Tale
We have friends who now live in WA that built all their bench tops and 2 folding table tops out of slabs he cut from trees while he worked as an arborist. The bench tops seem to have survived but the table tops all warped and cracked. The fix was to turn them over, weights to flatten them an actually bow them a bit the other way, then fill all the cracks with a mix or fibreglass resin and sawdust from the same piece of timber. A bit of artistic mixing and the colours even blended in with the rings and became almost invisible. Once that set, flipped it over and repeated the process. All sanded/planned flat and the problem went away. It certainly made the bus heavy, looked great but .....
