Can you explain all the peaks and troughs in both the E and W prior to 11am? It was a completely cloudless day.

George
Because it is mirrored in both arrays, it must have been some sort of interruption between the sun and the panels. If it was just in one side it could be birds or something creating a very fine shadow, but to be in both arrays means the block out was created well above the house. My guess is water vapour blowing over that has not risen high enough to cool and condense to create clouds.
That shimmering bit you see coming off the kettle or billy just before the water boils and enough water vapour to condense into visible steam, or even better, that shimmering air that is often reflective as it rises off a hot road, it mirrors the sky if seen at a certain angle yet can't be seen when that viewing angle changes .... I know there was a name for it but I can't remember what it's called .......
Anyway, that layer you see the sky reflected is doing the same thing up higher if the air remains hot enough and the sun is reflected even though you can see through it from the angle you are viewing it. If those wave lengths of invisible light from the sun are reflected back up it doesn't reach the panel so it can not create the photo voltaic reaction from it. It is only about 10% of the wave length the panel actually uses, the human eye can't detect those wave lengths so you don't notice they aren't there.

Do you get that before 11AM on every day George?
Can your "buyer" select if & when they can purchase your power or are they obligated to take it all?

Yes, everyday Bruce
Supposedly take it all at 12.5c/kWh

I have been waiting for a bill to arrive showing results since 17/7. Until last week we had not received a bill since May. when questioned re this they finally sent a bill from May till the day the smart meter was installed (5 days prior to solar). However, I have kept a spreadsheet of results every day since installation which shows that I should be credited $252 of feed-in tariff.

[edit] On 23/10 I covered 2 panels on E side and switched W side off. The result was as shown below. Today I am testing W side only.

Below is today's result of the W side 3kW with blue hazy sky.

We were told by an Essential Energy employee here in the lower Hunter that they were restricting residential systems to a max of 3kw into the grid unless they were 3 phase. It came about because a neighbour complained that despite having a similar sized system to George's it never went over 3kw output into the grid. Have no idea whether it was bullshit or if it wasn't how they can restrict output.

Hi George, as you can see by your own graphs, getting 2 days the same all day is virtually impossible. The peaks and troughs shown in the first graph with both arrays and the total output don't appear on the individual arrays, but the number of possible causes make it almost impossible to pin point. Maybe multiple days with both arrays connected and then the graphs layered over each other to see if the peaks and toughs occur at the same time might give a better indication as to whether it is solar irradiance, a glitch in the inverter, a load on the house supply taking the solar power before it gets to the second state where the graph is generated, or even a spike on the mains that causes the inverter to restrict output to maintain voltage and frequency within the specs.

Terry,

Today, the grid voltage shown at the inverter reached 257.8 but at the meter box I measured 251.

So which one was the correct reading? Did you measure the output at the inverter? That might tell you if your meter reads the same as their meter and might give you a guide as to what might be going on. The fact the mains is at 251vac is a problem all by itself, I thought the grid voltage had been dropped to 230vac to get a uniform across the grid voltage, so your part being 21vac above that bench mark could be an indicator that the generated power from the solar is meeting some resistance on the way out to the grid. It could also mean the grid have more going in that being taken out in your bit and there is a battle going on get the power out.

Is it possible the inverter has an upper voltage limit threshold where it would shut down momentarily if this voltage was exceeded? Could that be the peaks and troughs you see with both arrays powering the inverter?

I had Ausgrid come out to check the grid voltage and they advised that with so many households feeding into the grid after 9am the grid voltage was forced to climb. While they were here they completely replaced the connection from the street mains pole to to our connecting pole just in case there was a problem there. They were still here well after dark.

I intend having the 4mm cable between the meter box and inverter replaced with 6mm.

My inverter consistently shows above 240v Terry into the 250"s as Georger's .
239v showing at the moment .
