GPS Maps

We paid our road side RACV for 3 years up front, AND $ 60 off plus were sent a (free) GPS its a Garmin NUVI 40. The trouble is we have a TOM TOM. So Ive ordered a set of tropo maps ( on a small sim) for the garmin. ( we just may go off road) Ok Has anyone up dated their maps and is it a trouble worth stepping in to. As most thing data driven can take up/ down a road that isnt there ...
Hope all this makes sence as I had to read it twice my self, plus I hate the "I told you not to do that", when we are lost..

I'm not familiar with it but most things Garmin are pretty well locked down to you having to buy updates from them.

Rather than relying on the GPS map updates, I use Hema Australia 4WD Raster Map collection and Ozi Explorer on the laptop.
It costs ~$200 or ($150 on Ebay) and comes with a Lite version of Oziexplorer although I use the full version and the Android version as well.
I also have the UBD street maps but they are not available for the Android.

The Hema maps are very clear and work well on the Android for those of us with fading eyesight.

There is no route instructions to get you confused. It is great for knowing where you are!

The GPS does the in close street stuff and the laptop gives a larger view of the world.

I have found out that you cut n paste the map folder from the garmin,( with windows) then do it in revers to put the up date back ?
have only been told thats how its done. Will know soon enough. Or will have a nice looking do nothing stuck to the windscreen.....

Hi Tassyjim, Ive used raster maps before when gold prospecting in the west, just a little bit big useing the lappy. I do have a readers digest Atlas of Australia, and its fully tropo. all layed out in lat.log. very easy to find out just where you are. Have done it a few times when you are not sure which road you are on .
I think they are old aironortical? maps.The soninlaw has a Jabaroo and said he could nav. with them if he had zip eles to use.
Ive been puting good camps in there, lat-long, since 94. and some fuel prices. wish they were that price now..

I'd check first to see if your Nuvii, has life time map updates. It is does, then they are free to update your maps 4 times a year. I've only ever had Garmin since my 4x4 days when I had Ozi on my Ipaq days
Wouldn't buy or have a GPS without Free map updates anymore

I looked at that first aussichef, and It dont look like it, smile. I have a tom tom and Im hopeing I can fit the tropo maps in the garmin..to do a little off road stuff... well that the story so far..
Will know more when it gets here and the transplant starts...

Warren whats the air bag suspension like, we have the simplisity under our RS??? have air on the Disco works well no jaring on the draw bar, and level all the time....

Well it arrived and all I did was cut n paste the garmin folder from the unit to the desktop, just in case I have to put it back some time, The folder on the chip was to big to up load to the garmin ,so just pluged the chip in and it seems to be going ok. Had a few runs in to town and all the streets are still there ect. So who knows? Will know more when we go out in the sticks to see what happens. I did see a lot of small side roads that were not on the other maps...
The wonder of things, the size of a chip now is so small. I have a old HD that weighs a heap and has so little space ....
