BitTorrent warning for those with limit on download

T'other day, a friend convinced me to install BitTorrent & download a movie (750MB file was the smallest version I could find).
Within 24 hours, I noticed that my download speed had dropped considerably... to the point that some sites were timing out. I thought it might be too much traffic at the time. So I waited 24 hours.
Same problem.
So I checked my BigPong a/c, and found that I had exceeded my 8GB limit... to 11.6GB!
(I normally have difficulty exceeding 2GB of my allowance.)
BigPong had slowed my access speed to dial-up speed! AND I'll have to pay through the nose for the excess GBs. Double jeopardy!
I checked the only s/w I had installed - BitTorrent - and discovered in the Preferences that it automatically connects when I boot up, and allows others to upload the (only) movie I have on my hard drive! So I'd been feeding the movie to multiple people for 48 hours...
Obviously, I changed that preference.
So if you have a plan with a download limit (which should be called a 'Traffic Limit' because it includes uploads as well) be aware of this setting in BitTorrent.
Same probably goes for all such file-sharing s/w... check the Preferences when you install.

Ouch, I was tempted to try one of those but my hard drive is full so I haven't yet, don't think I will now. I bet not too many are downloading the movie now you are at dial up speed.

Folks you have been caught out oirating LOL. Part of using a bit torrent is that others have access to your directory that you down load to. When I download a file I have noticed up to 50 others backloading it. I don't go for movies as I don't have either the time or attention span for them. M main thing is music mainky doo wop style. Anything I don't want to reshare I move to another directory. That way the sharing thing becomes obsolete and your dowloads are kept to a controlable level. I never use wireless for it only my unlimited adsl at home.

It is worth using as the range of files is amazing. For those with long memories I have downloaded all the Goon show and Navy Lark radio shows from th 50s and 60s.

Click on stop when you have got what ever it is you are getting. Stops it uploading. I rarely download on the road.
Suck it all down while at home! I have 500gb to play with. Have discovered though, its almost impossible to swap files between tablets without a computer handy, especially if one is an apple
