There's not a person on this site who can't remember - overheated radiator, dirty points, fouled spark plugs, vaporized fuel line, flooded carburetor, flat battery (often) no traffic control at busy intersections, dad too pissed to drive properly. And other reasons why the old days weren't necessarily better. Fun though!

"tanks" here---I remember all of those troubles in my 1st vehicle, a "Mystery Overland" I forget what year, but it was an old wreck that still run if looked after. The fuel pump was kaput so it had a 1 gallon carry can with a syphon hose feeding petrol direct into the carby float bowl. In those days not many young blokes had a car, and if you had a car you had a lot of friends. After the Mystery Overland, I had a Whippet ute. The next car I owned was a 1948 straight 8 Buick, a beautiful car and a pleasure to drive.

My first car was a Ford Consul, the 4 cyl version of the Zephyr which was a larger vehicle and had a 6 cyl engine. I completely rebuilt the engine and gearbox, cut all the rust out, bought good seats from a wreckers ..... then when I got my licence, bought a VC Valiant slant 6 and the Consul became a paddock basher A lot easier to pick up chicks with a white VC Valiant with 8" wide chrome wheels and an exhaust note that was outstanding (and cop-bait), than with a grey Ford Consul I could buy a lot more go fast gear for the slant 6 than the Consul 4 cyl as well, so at least 3 yrs income was poured into making it go faster and rebuilding the engine each time I over did it
Not one of my many vehicles between then and now could be refuelled by the solar panels on the roof of the Hino and not one of them could do 1800km on 40ltrs of petrol, but my PHEV Prius can and it only cost me $6,500.
As long as you aren't trying to set a speed record for covering the Tanami Track or the likes, you can recharge the batteries via solar while camped up, but if you run out of fuel out there, the sun will not be your friend

Ray, after the VW Kombi is converted to electric, I reckon the Jimny might be the next one to be converted. The Jimny did a brilliant job of pushing a Jayco Silverliner into the workshop today, so he still has plenty of life left yet

My first car was an FC Holden. Cost me $100, bargain ehh? It was a bit like Rays Renault. Used a lot of oil, but even more water. I was always doing something to that and the subsequintial (subsequent)( is that a proper word Ray)pieces of machinery that followed. That's why I think most of suspected into motorhomes eventually. Because we are all constantly repairing or finishing things off. That is one of the unfortunate parts of owning an RV of whatever description. It is never perfect and never finished.

My father used to tell me stories about the modes of transport people used immediately post-war. Many preferred motorcycles, some with sidecars for the spouse.
One of his friends bought a European micro-car — about the size of the Messerschmitt, but I think it was British.
His friends, including my father, used to mock his ‘toy car’, so he modified the bootlid, adding a giant key — which turned slowly as he drove.
