I suspect Steve was referring to SWMBO & me.

Note: The use of 'me' is correct. Easy way to decide if it should be 'me' or 'I' is to take out the 'SWMBO &' and see if it makes sense. In this case, "... referring to I." sounds distinctly wrong (Dame Edna does it deliberately).
However, if I'd said, "Steve & me are going to the shop." it's easy to see that's wrong by taking out the 'Steve &'... "Me are going to the shop." is definitely wrong.
See? Correct grammar can be easy!
