Morning folks, no extra chooks unfortunately, none for sale at present, but we do now have a new family member - Gina. Her life is going to be a bit different to what she's been used to on the station, but she seems pretty smart & hasn't appeared at all concerned about the owner & other dogs leaving this morning. We already know it will be hard to part from her when the Covid thing is over, but see her time with us as a 'halfway house' between station life & the elderly gent she will be going to. We think she is about 4 y.o, & has not proven to be a good cattle dog, tending to bite the cows legs, but she seems reasonably obedient, so now in training to be a 'pot licker'.

Re: Good morning daily
Don’t know the details Bruce, but I think she may have done more than ‘nip’. We also need to watch her as she is apparently quite capable of bringing down wallabies & chooks. She responds well to voice commands & finger clicks when within 20 metres or so, but if not watched will take off to do her own thing. She’s done that once this morning, returning covered in burrs from the direction of the neighbour’s property, so needs a close eye for the time being. Fences are nothing, she’s an Olympic standard high jumper!

Enjoy your time with Gina she looks a good healthy girl, maybe her time with you will settle her to live with the older gent.

Re: Good morning daily
Some dogs have a real knack with fences.
Looks like Gina is one of them.
In his younger days our rescue Lab demonstrated the ability to fly through a 3-strand barbed wire fence at full gallop without touching the wires.
Dropped the head, tucked legs up really tight and through like a javelin.
On the other side, the head returned to normal position & legs unfolded onto the ground without missing a stride.
Amazing. No idea where he learned that one.
One reason we had to install electric fences here.
He was also very skilled at tipping over wheely bins to rummage for food scraps.
Very smartly trained him out of that one!

Re: Good morning daily
Morning all,
So far so good. No more running off.She has learned of 'her spot' on the veranda. She looks for us through the open sliding doors when we are inside but knows not to come in (not something we've had to tell her). Took her for an early walk this morning & she saw a wallaby at quite close quarters. She was certainly interested bu a single "Ehh" from me was enough for her to just stand & watch it bounding away without any attempt to chase. I was impressed. She was with us all day yesterday & we are feeling confident that so long as we are around with half an eye on her she'll be fine. Definitely wants to please. Wouldn't yet feel comfortable being out of her sight for more than very short periods though. She goes to her kennel (cage) at night. Last night we took her into the cottage where we have the sat Tv set up. No furniture, except for the table with the Tv & our two camp chairs. We thought it was separate enough from our living quarters for her to 'know the difference'. She was fine until the door was shut, didn't misbehave, but was clearly quite unsettled being inside, so after 20 minutes or so we put her her in her kennel & she seemed happy to be there. Was met with a very calm dog as I approached the kennel this morning, I said "Morning Gina" walked past her to go water the vegies first & she didn't make a sound, just watched me & wagged her tail when I looked at her. When I let her her out a short time later she was just bubbling over with joy & had a totally mad run around at full pelt when told she could, around & around me until she was well & truly panting , at which point she came to sit next to me - looking up with a 'what now' look. That's when we went for a walk, with her walking at heel without being told. I stopped - she stopped. I walked on she followed at heel. Only running ahead if given permission. She may not have been the greatest cattle dog, but it's very clear she is pretty well trained. Perhaps a little headstrong as in "I've had enough of this now" but we are both already feeling more comfortable with her, & she with us. Pic is her sitting on the veranda watching me as I type this.

Cuppa,
Looks like you are both going to enjoy each other’s company!
Don’t forget to give her a hug every day.
Please keep us posted on how things go.
