Nothing is going to change in regard to our "leaders" they are too deep in the shit hole of $$ and that is what rules them and they in turn rule us. The old saying still exists ie Money makes the world go round.

Re: Phone app
Was't going to comment any more on this app thingo, however the discussion has changed a bit, so here goes.
The app is a big con job, it is useless other than for nefarious reasons. It's already being used to try to scam people, it's an after the event notification, not one that will slow or stop the spread. For it to work, someone has to be diagnosed first, or it does nothing but collect information of peoples movements and contacts, which is much more sinister. There is nothing to stop them from adding someone onto the register that isn't contaminated they want to track unknowingly, already there are reports of people getting texts saying they have yet to download the app and those that have deleted it, it comes back within a day. Once your Ph number and location is revealed when you download it, they know exactly who you are. Think they passed legislation a couple of years ago which means Ph providers have to provide them with a persons data on demand and this app opens the door to abuse. We read almost daily of someone in the authorities accessing someones data without permission and using it for nefarious reasons.
As for leaders, not one decent one on the planet, all brain dead deluded ideologues, who don't have a clue about anything real. Sadly think we are seeing the end of another human era and society, just one look at the world situation, our climate, environment, the sociological and economical suicidal drive to globalisation. The unbelievable rise in the use of amphetamines is seeing horrendous outcomes on our roads, homes and society, along with many other little things we have yet to notice.
The problem we face is our leaders seem to think they are infallible and everything will turn our fine, just around the corner. But history tells us that's the attitude humanity has taken in the past and it all ends in the collapse of societies which seem at their peak. We are at our peak, our social, political, economic and all systems have no place to go but down, we have failed to establish a sustainable society, just a greedy wasteful and elitist one, where the rich get richer and everyone else gets poorer.
It won't get any better soon, you have to remove the cause of the problems before you can achieve a cure. Just look at our health system, purely designed to suppress symptoms but never to remove the causes, so even though we are supposedly living longer, are we and if so, it seems drugged to the eyeballs and in pain. Have a look at history and you may find society hasn't change much, it's still an elitist one where some have all the resources and money, everyone else gets the crumbs and told how lucky they are to have that.
Growing homelessness, growing unemployment which with this virus has accelerated and many will not have a job when it's over. Many business will have gone and they won't be replaced, our wonderful governments are only concentrating on pandering to the big end of town. So we see more toll roads, more big towers and more useless major projects which do nothing but put more of our money into the hands of the mega rich and no one else, other than short term jobs with no future.
We have no manufacturing industry, no primary industry of note and we import just about everything and this goes for most of the planet. When you add we are so overpopulated, yet they are still demand increases in immigration, because that's the only way they can achieve profit growth. We are now seeing the end of the road for our type of society, yet we can't quite see how far away it is, because it's coated in the kings new clothes, deluded fantasy which is falling apart around us.
Off course this is not the end of the world for humanity, just a big shake up and hopefully we will come out the other end a better race and not the warmongering, abusive, polluting, wasteful couldn't care less about anything but ourselves. What are our grand kids going to look forward to, when we've used up all the resources of the planet and left nothing for their future. The approach we have to the future just doesn't take sense and proves beyond doubt there's no decent leaders, just greedy, couldn't give a stuff, wasteful abusers of life.

Re: Phone app
Maybe not as bad as that NP, at least we have a choice of greedy mongrels to put in charge. Some countries are moving away from this "choice" system and putting dictators up in there place, they are fooled into electing them with sweeping powers that enable them to make themselves dictators, let's hope we never fall for that over here.
The part that has me asking just what is going on, the country supposedly couldn't afford to pay the unemployed a sum they could actually live on, yet when mass unemployment hit the number of voters trying to live on this p*ss poor amount would have seen the current mob out on their ear next election, the same mob changed the name and doubled the amount ..... does that mean they now accept people couldn't live on the money they deemed acceptable before because now there were too many of them and they could force a change? Paint me cynical
Next, why pay companies to keep employees when it costs more that paying them the now doubled "Job Seeker" payment? Is it because it holds the unemployment number down below a seriously embarrassing level for a govt that prided themselves on the number employed? .... even if it was work for the dole or one shift a fortnight, they were still classed as employed eh
or
was it to put money in the pockets of those in business that the current govt assumed were people who voted for their side? The reason they gave that it kept the people in a job doesn't hold much water if the business collapses once the money stops and the people would normally return to the job they thought they had ...... if the business was still viable they would just offer those laid off their jobs back ....
Where has all this money come from? Why couldn't they have used that money for infrastructure building before and given those who were attempting to live on "New Start" a proper job and the country would have had something to show for it?
If the countries people are expected to live on less and the NZ has set an example by cutting their parliamentary pay, why can't our lot put forward a plan to cut their cost burden on the countries bank balance?

Some good points there Terry. I've haven't agreed with some of what you've written in the past but most of this rant strikes a chord.T1 Terry wrote: ↑Wed May 06, 2020 11:35 am Next, why pay companies to keep employees when it costs more that paying them the now doubled "Job Seeker" payment? On the part, I've quoted above, the way I understand it is this. ScoMo has stated the idea was to keep the employees tied to the business. I can kindof sortof maybe see his point.
Being paid by your employer, even if he, in turn, is getting it from the government must be at least partially reassuring that you are in fact still employed, just can't go into work right now. that's a huge difference to thinking your unemployed.
sure, my argument can easily be blown apart by logic but I can't help but think there might be something to this thinking.

Agree with all you say Terry, however having spent some time close to federal government workings, was privileged and shocked at what they do know and their attitude to the populace. Could tell you some scary things most don't know about and how far out of touch with reality they really are. Was amazed at what they knew when my boss informed me they had done security checks on me because my work, which took me into their domains at times and also when socialising. My Boss used me as her token male for social business and government events, as her husband was always away somewhere, he was an admiral. She ran a catering service for government department meetings etc. So am aware of how deeply and comprehensively they delve into society life.
The scenario I put forward, is simply in line with the facts, ideological, environmental and of course, the associated science which is well known. This article shows where we really are and how those in charge are denying it, simply because it doesn't fit their agenda's. It's well worth a read, you only have to look at the world from an observers point of view and you can see they have to be right, but it may be even worse. There is a good side to all this, Aus is the only country surrounded by oceans. Every other country has land borders with other countries, or short distances between them. So we should be lucky enough to not be invaded or badly effected, if the scenarios they predict pan out and the way things are going, war between china and everyone else, is definitely on the cards. To me like the virus, they are minor things compared to the environmental and ecological collapse right in front of our eyes.
Our governments are aware of these facts, but like all ideologues they refuse to believe them, other than on economic grounds. The government has recently ordered the construction of many more armed patrol vessels for border force and navy inshore vessels, so they are expecting something in the future.

Re: Phone app
Hopefully the world's economies and leaders learnt a had lesson about globalisation and off shoring manufacture based on price. I also see that a lot of manufacturers were milking the Australian tax payer for subsidies rather than sharpening their pencils and making their particular plants more efficient.
There were a lot of licenced light globe fitters and trained spanner turners that were weeded out of the Port Kembla steel works shake out many moons back, but then they got carried away attempting to make less people do more work for less $$, out sourced maintenance work that should have remained in house so someone was held responsible for a half *rsed job.
Certain products need to be produced on shore, not imported, it might cost more and require some govt support such as import tariffs when they compete against a local product, at least to the point of making the playing field a tad more even.
I doubt we will ever be as dependant on China again to supply certain products and we shouldn't be so reliant on selling them stuff we dug up to hold the economy above the required level to keep the economists happy and to justify their pay packets.
At the moment none of the talking heads in politics excite me as far as their view for the countries future, but I doubt we will get the "None of the above" box to tick at the next election, so ......

Re: Phone app
Why can't we get good leaders? Most men and women, particularly those who have been exposed to the multitude of facets of life that would make a person wise and experienced enough to run a country, have a skeleton or two in their closet. The first importance of the media seems to be to seek out the shortcomings, perceived or otherwise, of people of competence in public life and destroy their credibility. Why would a successful person making a good living expose themselves to the probability of having their mistakes of the past, from which much of their wisdom might have come, exposed to their own detriment?
The flippant answer to the last question is, of course, EGO. Sadly, there must be many good people who could do the job but won't.
