Crew came through t’other day with trenching gear to lay NBN cable.
Had a special borer so they didn’t have to dig up our driveway.
However, when we wanted to leave, they’d parked it right across our driveway!! Had to ask them to move it.
A question arises: How do we connect to the NBN cable when we have no phone line?
Mobile phones only, and wireless broadband.

The wiring they are putting in connects to a box they put inside on the wall somewhere.
Then you connect your modem directly to that.

Talk to them about where you want the box put, otherwise they will just do what suits them best.

Problem: There’s a 50m driveway between the NBN cable and our house!
Will they bury the wiring alongside our underground power line for free??
Not bl***y likely!
Especially seeing the original owner planted an avenue of trees (now 30~40ft tall) on top of that cabling....

Ray, you don't have to connect to the NBN if you don't want to. If you have no phone or ADSL connection then they will just pass you by. But they will still flood you with brochures offering all sorts of deals. But if you do want it, then I would suggest you start asking questions.

Ray, you need to find out whether you would be connected directly to fibre or just fibre to the node and then normal wiring to your house.

Not sure what you mean by wireless, just guessing you mean you have a wireless modem currently on ADSL broadband.
If so you won't see a lot of difference from my experience.
Your provider will supply you with a new wireless modem which you will have to set up and connect all your devices to again.

My experience is to stay away from the major suppliers.
We have been through a few and have lately been with Spintel and are now quite happy.
Lots of drop outs with TPG and Amaysim.
If you want good download speeds go for a plan 1 higher than their base, usually 50Mb, the standard plan is probably slower than your existing ADSL.

We have fibre to the box inside, but I have also used friends internet that is fibre to the node and really you wouldn't know the difference.
It would be different if you wanted really high speed, but for general use it's all of a muchness.

Ray, our little town had the nbn installed early last year. They are still having total drop outs and losses of internet for days and weeks at a time. The wifi dongle that I use has been no trouble while all this has gone on around me and my dongle is getting as good speeds as their fancy nbn. It doesn't have to be paid for when I am not there to use it and the dongle does both at home and away.
Like you, the install was just too much hassle for something that really is not promising to be as good as what we already have.
