Re: Australian Trivia Only
David,
I found my reference in a book on a war story OTHER THAN the Coral Sea Battle.
It was the story of the Kokoda Track battle.
The author is well known.

Fitzsimmons is your author. Was your answer in his Rabaul?

Re: Australian Trivia Only
Ray, that's kind of funny because I also found my answer in books that weren't about the Battle of the Coral Sea. But not Kokoda either. It sort of gets back to who is writing the story and claiming it as fact. We all know that it was never a yank, but their spin on history is just a tad biased their way. I won't be reading Kokoda again just to find your answer. I still like my original one. I also liked his book about Tobruk, which I thought to be much closer aligned to the facts that I have grown up with.
Cheers

Re: Australian Trivia Only
While the WWII matter Fitzsimmons covers is interesting and detailed, I am not a fan of how his books turn out. I find them annoyingly chronically disjointed. It seems to me that different researchers have gathered data on their assigned subject and the book has been assembled without melding a timeline. It might be just me that thinks that.

Re: Australian Trivia Only
Steve,
You're not a reader of science fiction, I gather.
Timeline jumps are also common in the swashbuckling tales of Clive Cussler, Jack Higgins & their ilk.
To put everyone out of their misery, and clarify once & for all, Peter Fitzsimons says that a Pilot Officer Peter Pennycuick, flying a RAAF Hudson A16-160 of 32 Squadron, spotted the Japanese convoy on the morning of 6th May 1942, 10 NM west of the island of Misima, on a SSW heading.
Now, here's a simpler question:
How many nuts & bolts were used in the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge?

Re: Australian Trivia Only
Wrong!
Because the arch expands and contracts with the changing temperature, each side of the arch is mounted on an enormous hinge at each pylon. (About 20ft from memory.)
The hinge pins are equally enormous bolts with nuts to ensure they stay in place. (I think about 10” dia.)
So there are FOUR nuts & bolts in the bridge construction.
The rest are rivets. About a million of ‘em.
The hangers which suspend the roadway from the arch are rods threaded and secured with nuts at both ends, so they don’t qualify as bolts.
Brian,
As you were first to give me a nearly correct answer (the popularly believed one), I’ll give it to you.
Your turn to post a question.
