Backfire is a sign of a lean air/fuel ratio or faulty/leaking valves, unexpected emissions requiring frequent filter changes is a sure sign of faulty valves
Remember the old wisdom for those with faulty valves, "Never trust a fart" and "Never walk past a toilet"
