Hi Wayne,
you will need to measure the distance between the centre of the front and rear wheels with the steering straight ahead, easiest if you measure both sides, add them together and divide by 2, this will give you the wheel base. Now measure from the centre of the rear wheel to the back of the bus, this will give you the overhang. The max allowable overhang is 60% of the wheel base, not 2/3rds but 60%. You can't go past that limit without getting knocked off by the authorities. If the scooter will fit inside that max. overhang length then go for it, if not, you will need a trailer.

That I've never heard of, must do some measuring myself. I have a two bike Thule bike rack on the tow ball, does that fit in with this measurement?T1 Terry wrote:Hi Wayne,

you have a boggie rear axle Russell, you need to determine the point between the 2 rear axles and the measurement is made from there. same set up, an average between the rear wheel centres, measure the wheel base to the centre of the first axle and then add the average from between the two rear axles. Measure the overhang from the centre of the rear axle and add the average from between the rear axles.
Many motorhomes with boxes add on the bck are over length on the over hang, picky member from the authority will ping them one day, I have heard of instances where the motorhome has been dircted to a road side checking station and not allowed to leave untill all things are compliant, and they get a negative gift certificate to go with it.

Can I just add to this info that it has been known that they will hand out tickets if the number plate is hidden behind any bikes, boxes or even ball joints left in the towbar tongue. Lights & number plates MUST be visible.

The Thule bike rack I have on my tow ball has its own lights, indicators and number plate plugged into the standard trailer socket. Just an aside. Do you need a big scooter or a mobility aid. My wife uses a mobility aid ," Travel Scoot " ( have a look on google ) folds up and can be carried as cabin baggage in aircraft. I walked around Ayres Rock and Julie rode her travel scoot. It has a range of abouit 9 km before recharging. However you can get a larger battery. The distributers advertise in Wanderer and are members of CMCA. We have found it suits our needs

Yes an old thread I know but I thought I'd add something.
The allowed overhang (in the ACT anyway, and a few years ago) is 60% OR 12 feet, whichever is the shortest. On a long vehicle this can catch you out.
NOTE: I doubt it's actually 12 feet these days but it's around that so look it up if you think you are close.
