Not sure where this one should go, Admin. feel free to move it to another location.
Need some advice here about storing furniture and other household goods when we are on the road. Plan is to store it in the garage/flat but are worried about mildew more than anything else as we live in a pretty humid area and mildew can be a problem at times. We are thinking of wrapping everything up in plastic but whether this will stop it or not is the problem. Any suggestions......

Re: Storing furniture
I would think wrapping in plastic would make it worse. Consider a small air-con. It doesn’t have to be big or run particularly cold, just enough to dry out the air. I had a mate who lived in Cairns and worked in the Torres Straits for 10 days at a time. He had a window mounted ‘skinny mini’ running 24/7. It certainly didn’t chill his unit down but it did keep it dry. He left all the internal doors open and never had a problem with mould

Re: Storing furniture
I was lucky enough to have a brother with some acreage so I bought a couple of shipping containers (only one for us, the other for him). We have built a roof over the top of them which helps keeping the weather of them as well. We have been on the road now for 4 years and every time we visit him I open up the shipping container and replace the "damp rid" active ingredient. I also set of an insect bomb and check the rodent baits. The shipping containers are supposed to be sealed to keep the pests out but it gives us a sense of security. The containers have a roof over the top and I believe this also helps. The following link is showing the same stuff we use.

I also found this site whilst looking around which I might check out for myself.

Re: Storing furniture
Running something powered is probably not an option as we plan on letting the property so splitting the power bill is probably not a great idea, but we could of course try it on. Bride was in real estate and she seems dead against the idea.
Damp rid sounds like a better option of hand. Could always get someone to replace the product when its time expires. Same with spraying a bit of residual cockie spray around to stop those bloody thin gs getting a foot hold.
Looked at storage sheds but not everyone is as particular about pests etc.

Re: Storing furniture
Regarding storage sheds. NO Insurance company will insure contents in these sheds UNLESS they are on your property or in a sealed secure shed. We tried that 3 mths ago.

Re: Storing furniture
Our insurance company, APIA won't insure stored goods even on the property in the garage or the flat. Must be in the actual house. According to them no one will cover under those conditions.

Re: Storing furniture
Going to have to look further into this. Any flat furniture is covered but not stored furniture from the house stored in the flat.....makes sense eh....
