Used car warranty

Post by BernieQ2 »

Hi all, our car's manufactures new car warranty runs out at the end of this week.
I'm thinking of a extended warranty , car has 118,000Ks on it and full log book servicing.
Any thoughts on which warranty or is a extended warranty a waste of money ?
Over to you.

I actually think that, in most cases, all warranties are a waste of money so extended warranties definitely are.

Bernie,
Wot George said...

My cousin clocked up 220,000km on a 2001 Civic (bought new) without an extended warranty... just conscientious normal servicing.
The only fault which developed (after 11 years) was in the central locking. Warranty wouldn’t cover that anyway.
We have just ticked over 230,000 on it, and it still purrs like a kitten.

Bernie i think car manufacturers and insurance companies are tarred with the same brush
They'll take your money then get out of giving anything back anyway they can.

When I bought my Ranger I took out an extended warranty by Eric Insurance ( sold by Dealers) and I'm glad that I did !
I'm on my third gearbox, second transfer case, second set of injectors, rear engine seal and a few other things as well.
The third auto trans was a claim to the Transmission Re-builder that Ford use, not a claim on the extended warranty.

Any of the above items would have sent me broke and as the insurance paid for them all I'm happy.
As this Ranger seems to be a "Hand in wallet model" I have taken out a second warranty insurance and today I'm taking it to a repairer to get a noise in the front of the engine fixed, ( it's the alternator, but as I'm not a "Technician" just a retired mechanic I can't properly diagnose where the crunching noise is coming from )
So already I'm getting back a great percentage of my latest warranty as an alternator for a Ranger cost about $600 plus fitting .

Had one of those years ago
It was so clapped out it was retired mainly because the front floor rotted out, then the motor etc was put into a friend of a friend's car and went for another 10 years.

But it wouldn't even pull my 14' ( at the time ) caravan, so it was just a shopping trolley.

When I had the mechanical workshop in a past life, we had a regular stream of work from people who had bought a used vehicle with an extended warranty. Part of the warranty conditions were regular servicing by an authorised service centre that would stamp the book. We had previously carried out a warranty repair sent to us that was covered by one of these warranties but the service centre who was doing the book stamping couldn't handle the job, so it came to us. That put our name in the book as a repairer who did the book stamping services.
Then the problems started to arrive, failed gearboxes, engines, injection systems, brakes .... a whole heap of failures. So we quoted for the job to this warranty mob and they wanted to cut the labour rate in half, get the parts at cost but we had to supply and warranty them, and then reduce the hrs they reckoned the job should take ...... they wren't happy when I said no .... or words to that effect ;) Then I had the customer come at me because I was supposed to be part of this extended warranty deal that I was the place that would do the repairs if any were required ....... We had a very good reputation in the area so that was a great selling point and the salesman would show them our name in the back of the book to verify what was said was true ......
The customers were not happy when I said we could only do the work if they were willing to pay the gap, like a trip to the doctor and what medicare paid .....

This warranty mob would do anything to get out of honouring a claim at all and we were the meat in the sandwich ..... A lot of very unhappy customers that spread a lot of bad mouthing about us not honouring their warranty .....it got to the point I had to have a sign printed to put out each day that we were not a division of the XYZ extended warranty scheme and if they had an issue with the XYZ warranty to ring ....... and I put in the phone number and the person to speak to about their claim ....... that didn't go down well with XYZ warranty and finally our name was removed from the warranty booklet .... but for the next 5 yrs we still had people with old pamphlets coming in and demanding their vehicle be repaired under warranty .....
Basically, ask the service people who look after your vehicle now if they honour the warranty these people are selling or will there be a gap payment ...... That will tell you if the warranty insurance is worth anything of value to you

Our Civic doesn’t even have a towbar!
And the Suzuki Baleno is only ever asked to tow a 4’x4’ trailer.
However, the Late Jim the Junior Jeep (resuscitated by T1) regularly towed its own car trailer, and was used often when ‘4WD gardening’ was required (removal of stubborn tree stumps etc.).

It tows big mega weight vans now ... well pushes them in through the workshop door and drags them back out anyway  All 4 wheels chucking rocks trying to get the dual axle behemoths to turn 90* gets a few laughs, but it does a great job
