Sternum

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

Sternum

Post by Macca »

If any of you have to have your sternum sawn in half in the future- hope you do not- this is what it will be held together with, made of titanium. Sorry if I posted before.

Some are just wired together allowing for the bone to knit. That's how mine is done.

Plus, you don't want to have is sawn. Scored and broken is much better. It generates a stronger repair.

Mine has been done twice (!!) 1980 & 2001 no problems with the first but after the second event I now feel an occasional 'clicking' in the middle of the sternum... so reckon it's been wired together, but perhaps not quite tight enough.

It doesn't prevent full movement & no pain.

Apparently very few wired nowadays. This plate feather light and no wires to maybe feel. Coincidently our house sitter in 2010 who had a quad done while here and visited us a few weeks ago had same surgeon and plate .
