Time was when the ARDC ran the (then) 500, drivers wanted to do a victory lap.
ARDC said “NO! The farmers are locked in long enough. Gotta let them get back to business asap.”
Aerial view today shows about half the flat land behind Pit Straight is taken up with pit crew vehicles & accommodation ranging from tents to monster motorhomes, and behind them a paddock full of spectators’ similar accommodation.
Where are the farmers? I note that one of the former farmhouses on Mountain Straight is now a hotel/BnB!
Multi storey hotel on Conrod Straight (I suspect it is on the site of the old drive-in cinema?).
And of course the Kink in Conrod,to reduce the terminal speed at Hell (now Murray’s) Corner from suicidal to merely insane.
Also remember the local Rozzers used to come up to the mountain to slip bags over the speed limit signs on the morning of race day so practice & the race could be legal.
My, how things have changed since the ‘Sixties, when my Dad backed his ute up to the three-strand wire fence on pit straight with the back seat from a sedan in the ute tub so we could watch in comfort. (With just a Thermos of tea & some sangers for the day’s refreshments.)
