Live Box Frame

Post by bellett65 »

As you may have seen on other posts i have a new battery box. Well I have kept quite until now. The bloody thing was live. I was thinking that I must have had a surface leak inside the box. So I pulled it all out. Still no idea. Then the penny dropped. I still had the earth to hook up to the new charger and battery. When I drilled through to hook up to the chassis I went through a cross bearer. Voila, I looked where the brackets for the box were screwed down. Yep straight through to the bearer. Answer shorter screws problem gone. I kept quite about it because I knew it was something I had done. So watch it when mounting things on the floor in particular when volts are involved, I was lucky because only 14 volts there.

Did raise the hairs on the sweaty arms. It was 40 in the van when I noticed it.

Hi Peter
Did you actually measure the voltage ??
Most chargers are around 18V plus open ciruit
Also they are not pure DC so you have 100half cycle waves per second
AND the peaks of those are still higher,[ for a 18v meter reading, around 25V] ;)
That is why you wll feel extra low voltage Ac more than the same voltage DC. ;)
Also why any ACvoltage [or straight rectified] in excess of 50V is considered very dangerous, while with pure DC it starts around 100VDC

Those batteries bit big time, took a piece out of Brian's Hino body work and attached it to my brand new 10mm spanner :o Thought the negative was disconnected but where one of the plugs went though the battery box steel body the shell was linked to the battery negative. Wet hands between the positive terminal and the body sure gives you a hurry up as well, so the sweaty arms would have made a good circuit.

Peter,

yes I did measure it. It was consistantly in the 13.8 to 13.9 range. That is why I did not get in panic mode. Whilst trying to track it I had various items switched either on or off. I started to get closer once both solar and charger were physically disconnected . The screws never crossed my mind till I had drilled the hole to run the main earth. It happened as I looked up I saw the screws were pretty much in a straight line. That's when the penny dropped. All is well now. Just have to screw down invertor. If I keep going I'll have more fans under the bed than Justin Beiber
