Good luck. The diff seal sounds expensive. Hope all goes well.

The diff seal is a mongrel. That's what led to my pinion bearing inner race saga.

The whole thing needs to be set up precisely with the right preload..... otherwise, you're in for a world of trouble.

Bedford diff assembly is an art in itself. The pinion depth into the crown gear is machined too deep in the housing so shim spacers are required behind the inner pinion bearing, then a wad of gaskets between the pinion seal housing and the diff housing to fill in the gap the shims created. Those who aren't clued up on this B/S see the shims measure the same as the gasket on the front so they leave the shims out and bolt the assembly up nice and snug ...... and it lasts for roughly 1,000km before the whole diff assembly has to be replaced because the pinion depth in the crown gear cause all the bearings to fail due to the load applied and destroys the pinion and crown wheel ......
To add to this bit of fun, the crown wheel must be removed to set the bearing preload on the pinion because it needs to spin and see a load of ...... can't remember for a new set up and slightly less for used set up. A number of rotations using the inch/lb tension wrench is required because all the assemble packs down under the preload and then the preload is lost ...... it took me a whole day just getting the pinion preload correct, then you mark where the nut tightened to and undo it again and fit the seal  It is a very fine line between someone who is a master at rebuilding Bedford diff assemblies, and someone who will destroy a very expensive crown wheel and pinion and bearing set .....

Not on mine. The pinion is held in a vice and a spring gauge is set to measure the preload on the bearing. The nut is tightened to 240ft/lbs or so.

The gaskets (rice paper thickness) is a critical measurement/setting; used to locate the pinion fwd/aft on the crown wheel. The L/R setting is done in the housing with the cover off.

If they didn't disturb the gaskets, or anything else, you may get away with removing the tail shaft flange, replacing the seal and reassembling.

Good morning everyone. We had a lovely day weather wise yesty. Nice and sunny with no cloud. I finished up looking after youngest gkid, so we went fishing. Lots of little bream about. Watched a big stingray working over a big patch of sea grass and had a pod of dolphins come up the river.
Did bugger all else. Haven't got much planned for today.
Safe travels everybody. Enjoy your bin truck day Tanks.
Cheers
