Sitting at Millaa millaa Queensland

Post by Keevo52 »

G,Day all

we finally got away from Fishing Point about three weeks ago, we are flat towing a Suzuki Vitara behind the Winnie, we travelled up through Central NSW pretty quickly and once we hit the border we have been taking it a bit easer, although in saying that we have had a couple of big days of three to four hundred k,s travelled( the co pilot wanted to stay near places that had some feature, creek or river) once we got to Roma the weather started to warm up a bit, We continued on towards Emerald were we stayed at a free camp called Wallaroo, while we were there the owners of the property through which the road passes called on us, they were very friendly and even gave a book they had written about their early days in the bush, a very interesting read.
We then on towards Emerald, we stayed at the dam at Lake Maraboon, no redclaw caught by me, while there we did a side trip to Sapphire and Rubyvale where we bought a bucket of wash, we found a red sapphire of about 2 carats uncut and a blue of about a carat, not bad for 15 dollars, After Emerald it was off to Barcaldine, Longreach, onto the dinosaur trail which took in Winton,Hughgeden and side trip to Richmond, all very interesting and something I had wanted to see for quite a while, as it was in the high 30,s in these places we opted to stay in CP,s for the air con so we could get a decent nights sleep, then onto Charters Towers were we had to wait for mail to catch up to us, again we stayed in a CP which was not what we had planned for this trip, free camping was how we would have liked to do it but the weather sort of made us use CP,s for comfort reasons.
After Charters Towers we travelled up to Millaa Millaa on the inland road, we found a free camp outside of Ravenshoe for one night, it was in my mind to leave the motorhome there while we explored the area in the Suzuki but as the place was deserted I didn't want to leave it unattended, so it was off to check out the free camp at Ravenshoe, the co pilot wasn't happy with that so we went to Millaa Millaa and booked into the CP there, we have done our washing of vehicles and clothes while here and have explored the waterfalls and other local sights, tomorrow we go to Lake Tinaroo we have booked into the State Forest Park there for a week, have brought a kayak with us so I can have a go at the Barra and whatever else attacks my lures, if it works out well we may stay another week there, then its on to Mareeba and Cairns, then we start to head home, we have to back in Fishing Point by mid May, any information about free camps would be appreciated.

Rocky Creek, R.A, just north of Tolga is a good free camp, should be plenty of room at this time of year.
Mareeba Rodeo Ground at $15 per night is good value, dump point on site, showers & toilets.
We stayed at Ellis Beach C.P. north of Cairns, $32 per night unpowered.

Maybe you should go up to Mount Molloy, down to Mossman, have a look at Port Douglas & back down the very scenic coastal road to Cairns, worth the Ks when you are so far north.
Rifle Creek R.A. is another freedom camp, donation requested at Mount Molloy.
The beaches north of Cairns are all nicer than Cairns itself, Cairns is a big city.

Or duck up to Cooktown first, then back to Mount Molly then down to Mossman the Daintree Port Douglas then cairns via the coast.
WE have this part on our trip when we get there later this year.
Enjoy.

We are currently at Mareeba Rodeo grounds, $16 with power. Spent Easter with our American Car Club at Malanda Falls Caravan Park, great weekend and a great place to stay.

Try Rocky Creek just north of Atherton, Rifle Creek just north of Mt Malloy, under the bridge at Gordonvale, Babinda rest area, Bilyana rest area (between Tully and Cardwell), Francis Creek (just south of Ingham), Rollingstone, Bluewater

Still a bit quiet here, only about 20 or so at the moment. I imagine that will increase soon though. We are going down to Cairns in the Suzy on Friday and heading back to Malanda on Saturday to see an artist who is painting a mural on the back of Wilbor
