Mobile phone signal repeater/booster

Post by Wilbor »

We are on wireless internet through a Bigpond Elite Network Gateway and while I have an external aerial for travelling, inside at home our signal strength is low, move the modem outside and up to 4 bars. I have been looking at one of THESE. Has anyone else any experience with a mobile phone repeater/booster :?:

I looked at that, we get 3g up here and I think it will be a long time coming before we see LTE. I won't be travelling with it, it will be a fixture on the building

If your external aerial works at home, why not just get another for home?

We have a similar problem in that at home, the phone works well, but the wireless internet keeps dropping out, apparently the fault is the copper cabling to the Tower, there is insufficient capacity for the number of users. The aerial in the bus makes little or no difference, been onto Telstra, complained and the general result is that the cabling is due for replacement (and will be done when they get around to it, and not before), It is useless looking at another supplier as none of the others work in our area at all, except for those that use the Telstra towers and they have the same problems.

It states that those units are illegal in Australia!

Of course that is another reason to stay on the road.

Considered a permanent outside aerial. Holes through roof, ceiling and walls to get to where the modem lives plus the cost of the aerial and coax and fittings and my coax crimper is too big for the small fittings V the active repeater. The active repeater wins, as long as it works :)

The active repeater has limited range and being fixed at our rural property won’t affect anyone else. They are not illegal in Aus, it is the in line amplifier that is. I may or may not have used an in line amplifier on a boat between Cairns and Torres Strait and if I did it may have made a huge difference ;) Hopefully the active repeater will do the trick, but has anyone actually got any experience with one :?:

Well the repeater arrived all the way from China and is now installed. Signal strength on the modem has gone from 1-2 bars to 4-5. It does have to be fairly close though, I thought it would work over greater distances but it does work and that’s what counts. Mobile phones inside now at full strength too. I might even see how it goes on the road next time we head of :) :)

Which ONE OF THESE was it, as the original post has the above item as no longer listed?

Rob can you maybe explain it a little more please?
You say "it has to be pretty close though" .... what has to be close to what?
Maybe a picture?
Does anything plug into what?

No all wireless. The modem is a wireless Bigpond Elite Network Gateway and the repeater has an outside aerial with a magnetic base which plugs into the repeater unit which has a small internal aerial. I thought it would broadcast all around inside but it appears to have a limited internal range. I have it about 4m away and it works perfectly.

The modem and has 4 ports for various devices and also wifi. I have the desktop with a wired connection and phones, notebook PC and a printer connected by wifi

it's like one of these Repeater

So may I assume that this 850MHz, or this 900MHz with the fixed external antenna would be worth the extra money?
