Good morning daily

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

Hopefully I'm back on again. Yesterday, it was so hot the bus air con was way out of its league
Inside bus temp 2.jpg
even though it had been running for around 4 hrs at that stage
I'm not game to start the process of swapping it out for one of these https://www.airwaresales.com.au/product ... 60zsxawvh/
because as soon as I start, it will either rain or drop to single digit temps .....

That's pretty expensive

this was the other choice https://www.airconditioning-online.com. ... te-nanoex/ and this one has that deodorising, virus/mould killing thing and around $500 cheaper.
This is the latest Dometic https://www.mygenerator.com.au/product/ ... r-with-adb, rough
ly $600 cheaper but less than half the cooling power

This is an alternative https://www.mygenerator.com.au/product/ ... onditioner @ roughly $1500 it's a lot cheaper, but again, only a little better than half the cooling power .... and they are both rooftop rattlers
I guess if I went with one of these and it wasn't up to the task, I could sell it to someone with a smaller motorhome. The fact that it has 3.5kW of cooling power and the Ibus that's in there at the moment is a claimed 2.8kW and hopelessly inadequate, it doesn't offer a lot of promise ....

I don't want to have to fit two of the things just to keep cool, where would the solar panels go to power two of them anyway?

Terry to be realistic, considering a MH is nothing more than a big box with air circulating on all 6 sides and with all those lovely windows around it, there is very unlikely to ever be a satisfactory outcome. Maybe a 7Kw cooling split domestic job plugged into an outside power supply?
To ever power what you're looking for via solar just ain't gunna cut it! To even come close it'll be between 10:30am & 4:30PM. You know that once the sun heats up the panels, the output is restricted? After that your batteries might last a couple of hours.

We travel mostly in autumn and head south so don't need aircon. Definitely don't head to QLD in winter as we definitely don't need two summers per year.

T1, I checked out most of the roof rattlers at our local caravan and camping show a week or so ago. None of the on-site sales people knew much about the Houghton units. But a lot of them are fitted to various vans and small m/homes.
I was kinda hoping that the Dometic rep was there, but no.
I'm looking at fitting a splitty of some sort instead of a roof rattler. Maybe. The cassette units still need a compressor unit to go somewhere as well. I reckon a splitty is the go, more space for some extra solar and a bit of a height reduction.
Cheers

The ceiling cassette units are designed to fit inside a false ceiling or house room ceiling with the workings up inside the ceiling cavity, no waterproof cover or pretty looking outside. It will require a cover to be made to go over it. I haven't been on the roof to measure how high the Ibus is above the roofline, but looking at the specs, from the inside flange that mounts against the ceiling to the top of the cassette ranges between 230h to 270h for the bigger output units. The plus/minus is that they are square, 575 x 575, smaller on the outside but a bigger hole than the 350 sq hole the rooftop rattler slots into.

My plan is for the outside unit to fit in one of the bins, so depending on the make and model, these vary quite a bit.
I'm leaning towards this one now, https://www.airconditioning-online.com. ... te-nanoex/ the outside unit is 619h x 824w x 299 deep, the inside unit is claimed to be 230h x 575 x 575, but the specs say 243 x 575 x 575 ..... I just measured the Ibus rooftop rattler and the outside dimensions (above the roofline) 250h x 800 wide x 1mtr long, so it won't take up as much roof real estate, but I'll have to make a cover.

Somewhere, many moons back before I was banned from the caravanner forum, there was a thread where someone had fitted one in the their caravan, can't remember the model, but they were certainly impressed with the performance and lack of noise ....

Even the 6kW model with the boosted performance to bring it up to 7kW, it draws is specced at 2530w, under 100 amps from the nominal 24v LFP battery pack and the average draw is 1770w or 69 amps.
Once the temp outside levels off a bit so the outside heat soak isn't as bad, (when the sun goes down) I'd expect to draw to be about half that, less than 1,000w or under 40 amps from the battery.
230 Ah (leaving 30Ah for the fridge between sun down and sun up) to power the air con, even if it ran at half power the whole time, would last for 6 hrs. From the specs
Power input (min – max) Cooling : Heating kW 1 .77(0.34-2.53): 1 .66(0.39-2.45) it could be dropped down to 340w (13.2 amps) and it would run for 17.5 hrs.

If worst can to worst, I could run the diesel engine to spin the 80 amp alternator (and the engine powered air con system) for a total of 3 hrs during the day and fully recharge the battery .... still better than a generator running 24/7 or even 12 hrs during the day ......
