240v charger to 12v batteries - cable size

Post by nomads »

Hi all, I hope this is in the right section.
The charger is a Projecta IC50 and battery bank is 400ah, located approx 6.5 metres (one way) from the charger.
On the photo, I have put in 8awg cable as that is what I think was installed originally (within the walls, so very difficult to change).
I am stuck with this cable, even if it is not 8awg
The old charger, (Projecta IC5000) appears to have crapped itself after 13yrs of hard usage.
The voltage drop of 1.4v (or .56%) would seem ok.
Any comments on the cable size or the other input figures I have used.
Regards,
Ian

Maybe I misunderstand but you worked out the loss on AC power while it's only 12 v nom on that cable. I'd be seeing if I could get the charger close to the batteries & run the 230v if need be.

You aren't pulling 50 amps at 240vac. 50 amps x 14.4v = 720w. 720 x 1.1 (to allow for 10% loss through the charger) = 792w ... say 800w. the wiring and power point is designed to carry 2400w, so plenty of power capacity still available for other loads totalling 1800w.
