The old Pacific Highway through the Buladelah Mountains was just as much “fun” as the Bulli Pass, but longer.
Used to do that run regularly in my Mini. 😊
(In the ‘sixties, when the Mini was built by BMC, and a proper minimalist, fun car to drive.)🚘

I can;t understand why after seeing and going on a few of the big hills when we have been out and about how come they say the Adelaide down track is really dangerous? It is nothing if approached with care and abide by the warning signs.

I agree.

I just rolled the bus down in the exhaust brake. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Worse in Tassy, where you'd come around a corner and have seconds to wash off speed and shift down a few gears.

Cunninhams gap, you go down in the same gear you go up, for us in VP that is 4 out of 7. Jakes definitely on, very occasional slight touch on the anchors.

The problem with the run down into Adelaide, if you use the brakes in a heavy vehicle at all, and get caught by one of a million cameras on the way down, it is an immediate fine and loss of points for not maintaining a safe speed ..... they consider a "Safe Speed" means a gear low enough to hold the speed without the brakes being applied .... crazy I know, but never let it be said that the powers that be here in South Australia, particularly near Adelaide, think rationally. There have been so many major accidents involving run away trucks down that section of the hill, they are over the top as far as policing the speed and safety part .....
The old rule of coming down the hill in the same gear as you would climb it, isn't enough in this case, the engine braking isn't near as powerful as the engine pulling capability these days .....

It is so crazy on the decent into Adelaide, if you are driving one of the big 4 X 4s used to tow a caravan, like a Silverado for instance, if it has heavy vehicle plates, you must follow the same rules as a fully loaded truck .....

I usually tuck in behind a nice truck with no jumping on the brakes every 5 seconds and watch my speed. The cowboys that get into trouble are mostly young know it alls, badly maintained trucks, over seas ?drivers. added to that drugs and booze. Didn't Lesley have some issue the hill and caravan?
