COUNCIL has been called on to erect "No Camping'' signs and deliver on-the-spot fines to stem the number of illegal campers setting up in the Cairns CBD.
Rodney Hansford and his wife live in a $1.5 million penthouse along the Cairns Esplanade and are fed up with backpackers setting up makeshift homes outside their apartment.
"I disagree with this three warnings thing,'' he said yesterday "Our council should do something to deter them, there's no signs up to say they can't camp there.''
He has written to the Cairns Regional Council several times complaining about the number of vans parked along the Esplanade.
"It is pretty bad. We have our tea on our patio and they just change where they are.
"There is nothing wrong with parking during the day, but they run pieces of rope between trees to hang up their clothes, and have breakfast on the footpath.''
A Cairns Regional Council spokeswoman said it was "extremely rare'' for fines to be handed out to backpackers.
Instead, local law officers give tourists warning slips and a list of places to camp.

How dare they camp for free when these good people have spent $1.5 million buying a penthouse apartment so they can look down on the poorly lower class peasants. They should be hung drawn and quartered, but some where else so it doesn't make their area look untidy

My opinion that is negative as to what we are trying to get councils to agree to, campers should not set up camp on the Cairns Esplanade & then hang out their washing, easy to find a more out of the way place to do same, Cairns is a big city now.

I think I must have some French in me some where. Often I hear people let loose and then say "excuse my French" …….as they are words familiar to me I'm assuming it must be from a some hidden French heritagegenerdawg wrote:Terry, I had no idea you had a French heritage.T1 Terry wrote:...viva la revolution

I'd go just to see if I could get a free breakfast. On a slightly more serious side to this subjectBernieQ wrote:Can I camp there just to see the changing of apparel .

I agree with Shirley, It is not acceptable to set up camp along the esplanade. Unfortunately giving fines to travellers from overseas is a waste of time as they don't pay them and simply fly home after their travels. Maybe impound their vehicle until they pay the fine may be a better way to go.
