I know someone who spend mega $$ buying genuine parts to rebuild a diesel engine, that will probably never see the kms the cheap parts would have achieved .... but it was their money, their choice .....
Not really Terry,

This is what I’ve spent so far.

1 Genuine Piston oil cooler: $53
6 Injectors overhauled and calibrated genuine Bosche parts: $1170
1 genuine laminated steel head gasket: $167
1 genuine Air compressor overhaul kit: $120
6 Japanese chrome liners: $681
1 Japanese set of big end bearings (6): $63
1 Sump gasket:$28
1 Japanese Piston ring set(6): $130
1 Japanese Main Bearing set (7): $150
1 Taiwanese set Thrust Washers: $34
12 Japanese Valve Guides: $64
6 Japanese Inlet Valve: $118
6 Japanese Exhaust valves: $127
6 Double Genuine Inlet springs: $63
6 Double Genuine Exhaust springs: $101
6 Genuine individual steel laminated exhaust gaskets $160

Labour for head rebuild – estimated below $1000 (quoted about 800)

Total $4229 (inc labour) for a full rebuild with Genuine or Japanese parts. All in stock and supplied locally at a counter, with warranty and exchange.

I wouldn't call that mega.

I don't have the facilities or finances to fund a tow or repair out of town.
In terms of risk management, this is my mitigation plan.
My contingency plan if a break down occurs is to have a cup of tea and think about it. ;)
Wasn't there a diff problem a while back? Did you end up getting that sorted? I'd be rather nervous just driving down the road if I couldn't fund a recovery ..... do you tow a vehicle with you?

That $4230 would buy a lot of fuel for the Winnie, especially when I sort the LPG problem ...... it was 95c/ltr in Echuca, for 43 ltrs that's $45 worth of fuel, how far would the Bedford on full noise moving 12 tonne get on $45 worth of diesel?

You're right, it would, about 2000 litres petrol equates to about 4500ks
Let's hope the gas helps with the fuel economy.

The bus is never going to be pushing 12 tonne, so sort of a mute dig. ;)

Hi Dot.

It's about 38 years old. Bus is 52.

For the first 5-10 ks, it would blow lots of blue smoke.
Has lots of blow bye out the crank case ventilation.
The air compressor was passing oil into the clutch air assist cylinder.
The engine had started to develop a very slight miss.
And the injectors were rooted when tested. Some dribbled worse than a bloke due to have the prostate removed.

The final straw was the "hiss" coming from the engine in time with the smoke pulse of the crank vent.

Everything was just worn when I measured it up. And the rings were completely gummed with carbon.

How is she doing now? At least you had the knowledge to do it, that is one thing I really miss.

Bottom is finished. I'm just waiting on the head to be finished. Sometime in the next 2 weeks.

I also have the factory workshop manual which gives all the specifications and limits.

Plus Isuzu are absolutely fantastic. I give them a part number and they look it up and quote for the latest superseded one. Parts out of Japan are about 2 weeks if needed. No extra cost.

Did you ever have the knowledge to do that sort of work Dottie?
I knocked all up $16,000 from the original asking price on the Winnie, just cost me for some tools to do the testing, once we got back home, I did the fix using a flapper wheel on the Ozito angle grinder and a vice I had to spend a few hrs de rusting and WD 40 to get it functional .... the fix wasn't in the manual, it's all about diagnosing the problem from the symptoms and follow up tests and finding a fix for the minimum $$ expenditure ..... when you are working on your own vehicle, any fix that only involves labour hrs is always the winning option .....

Jon,
Apart from those minor annoyances, what was REALLY wrong with the engine? 🤔🤣

You were comparing the fuel economy of your rig to the fuel economy of the Winnie, I was just pointing out that you can only compare apples with apples if you want a meaningful comparison.

We sort of met up with a couple who had recently bought the same model Winnebago explorer as we have and they were towing a small Jeep A framed behind it.
They had a diesel powered version and they overtook us on the flat doing probably 115km/h ..... the first hill, cloud of diesel smoke showing it was working hard, out around him and gone  Still glad we have the performance of the V10 6.8 ltr ;) 8-)
