What is the difference between an EV and a hybrid car?

Re: Good morning daily
I doubt I got to press send on the next post before it started all over again ..... This might be a repeat of the "Perfect Storm" that drowned the area in the late '90s. One low pressure system swing onto the coast as it pushed the one over the coast back out to sea to refill with rain and intensify till it's strong enough to push the new system out .... and the pattern continues, but a shorter time between cycles with far more intense rain as the cycle speeds up ......T1 Terry wrote: ↑Wed Jul 02, 2025 12:32 pmThe wind didn't roll us over last night, not for want of trying, and beside the water that must have come in around the water heater, the inside stayed dry.
Took the MG4 surfing yesterday afternoon to get some goodies for dinner, lots and dead ICE vehicles on the roadside with their 4 way flashers signalling where to failed to proceed, so the road recovery teams must have been working hard .... no squirt of WD40 under the distributor cap gets them going again![]()
The rain has stopped at the moment, so back to the water heater to at least get it glued and screwed into place.
A few trees down around here, one even made it onto last nights ABC news .... Closed the airport and stopped the trains around Sydney .... glad I got my flights over and done with before that .....

This was 11:30, or 1130 hrs Ray time, that black part pointing towards the coast is roughly where we are ...... they were suggesting it would head off shore .... seems it ignored the suggestion

Re: Good morning daily
An EV (BEV) has an electric motor and a big battery and can only drive on the electric motor if there is enough energy stored in the battery.
A Hybrid (HEV)has both a petrol motor and an electric motor and a much smaller battery. It is more expensive and heavier than the same model as a pure EV.
Some hybrids have a battery that can be plugged in to recharge (PHEV) as well as the petrol engine (ICE or Internal Combustion Engine) that can drive MG1 (Motor Generator) that doubles as the ICE starter motor as well as being driven by the ICE to recharge the battery as well as supply power directly to MG2. MG2 bother drives the vehicle and acts as a generator for slowing the vehicle down, known as regenerative braking.
As the models have improved, so has the range on the battery only in a PHEV, some up to 100kms or more, some hybrids have a combined range of over 1500kms these days, our 2006 Prius had a combined range of 1,000kms, it's getting a bit long in the tooth and we drive a bit harder than we did in the past, so it's down to around 800km for 45ltrs of unleaded, 900km for 45 ltrs of E10, both the Prius and the Winnie love E10, when we can find it .....
When the '06 Prius had the extended range battery in the back and we charged it from the Hino while at the workshop, we reached 2800kms on a tank full and we only filled it up because we weren't certain we could get home from Adelaide on what was left in the fuel tank ...... if we could have fast charged it, we would have only had to put fuel in to stop it going stale in the tank and causing problems ....

Re: Good morning daily
Dot, they aren't called power points out in wop wop land. I'd call them EC recharge points in woop woop.
There is an ever increasing list of them. Most communities that have a forward thinking outlook on their future have EV charge points that are usually accompanied by a covered carpark with a roof full of solar panels. The network isn't quite big enough yet, for me to advocate for the use of an EV.
Interestingly enough, I was talking to the single mum next door earlier this evening. She has just ordered a Rav 4 Hybrid. There is a 3 - 6 month wait time on delivery. The dealer didn't tell her about the wait time, til they had her deposit.

That's if the boat doesn't catch on fire. There is a 3 - 6 month wait time on delivery. The dealer didn't tell her about the wait time, til they had her deposit.
EV's are becoming more and more popular in the bush. Drive to town and back. Charge up. No fuel costs.

Re: Good morning daily
Most of them have an app that you must download then just follow the instructions , so I've been told. It must be fairly simple. My BiL, who is a techno illiterate legal person can do it, so it can't be that hard. All you need is a credit card and a smart phone. Debit cards don't work in most of the ones that I know of. You just set up an account and Bob's your uncle.
The ones at a private residence are just plug and play.
Jon, maybe that's why it's a 3 - 6 month delay. Depends on how long it takes to get a boat load through.

Dottie,
Even a tiny town like Rutherglen has one (count them — use your fingers if you need to — a whole ONE!).
… that is, unless you (still) own a Tesla AND pay for a night at a particular local motel. In that case we have two.
