The JG inserts are plastic.

Not only the inserts are important but I think the little circlips are critical too.

While people think it to stop the pipe pulling out, I think it also keeps the pipe perpendicular/square to the O ring making a better seal.

With out the circlip, the pipe is on an angle inside the fitting which then forces the O ring into an oval shape. (as it seals the pipe which on an angle)

Prof T, any news on the coils.?

supersparky wrote: Sun Jul 06, 2025 7:52 pm Terry, I'm kinda hoping that you have put those brass insert thingos into all the hoses before you finished all the connections. I've always thought that, that is the downfall to all those JG failures. The tight arsed manufactures of most mh's and vans don't usually use them, cos they can save a few bucks, but cause interminable grief years later.
Of course, if I'm preaching to the converted, ignore this post.
Didn't change the John Guest hose inserts, if you open the last photo in a new tab, you can see I eliminated all the mess of fittings used to make the 90* bends with brass 1/2' BSP fittings, so they take to load of the fluid direction change, the John Guest connection is then straight so no sudden direction changes in the flow putting pressure on the John Guest connectors ..... it actually tore the plastic locking collar piece out of the fitting, with the red locking C clip still in place, the lugs on the multiple legs of the locking collar actually snapped off to allow the whole fitting to eject from inside the screw in piece ....

Just lucky maybe  I am sure paying for breaking those two mirrors on the Fuso ....

The minor ones that are just annoying I can live with ..... well, I guess I have to live with all of them really ...... it was fairly spectacular when it blew out

Well, I've managed to remove 9 of the 10 plugs, can't get to socket to drop down over the front left hand side plug .... and naturally, that in a spot I can't see down into the plug hole to see what is stuck up the side of the plug.

Compression is down a bit on the cyl that had no compression, 80psi, possibly a bit of bore damage, but the breathers in the head don't smoke or huff, so I'm not certain that is the problem. The next cyl along on the right hand bank is now 180psi, so that was just valve clearance issues causing the poor compression .... the other 7 cyls are all good, compression all over the shop, but between 120psi and 190psi, so not going to worry too much about that.

I'll but new Iridium plugs for it as it has a mix of NGK Iridium and Nippon Dismal "normal 5,000 kms cycle life if you are lucky" plugs .... the Iridium plugs look well worn but the right colour, the Nippon Dismal plugs are much darker into the porcelain valley and only clean around the electrode tips ..... often a cause of misfiring because the black carbon soot carried the current to ground rather than it having to jump across the gap ....

Next task, figure out how to get this last plug out .... maybe sacrifice a 5/8" plug socket by cutting on plug flat section out and see if I can get that to locate over what ever is jammed down beside the plug hex head ....

Off topic but the same Q/ Prof T1, I have been watching the show "Outback opal hunters" and was wondering why they don't have solar / batteries / lith to use for their equipment rather than a genny when they have heaps of sun out there??? and also on their vehicles?

What could have fallen down beside the spark plug?

Do you have a little camera?

Let's just say, it's easier to put petrol in the generator, pull the cord and plug in. It requires electrical knowledge to wire up solar and batteries and an inverter .... fortunately, electricity scares most people, but I just watched a series of these videos on fault finding DIY electrical installs in Britain ..... and I better understand why there is so much push back against DIY electrical work https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Br8Hno-uDyk

I'll give an example of what would probably happen, even if a clued up sparky set it all up for them .....
I worked for a rail repair/install mob who had a NSW Rail electrician as the owner, but for some reason, he didn't seem to be able to get even the leading hands to understand how to add up the total load on a circuit.
I had multiple generators to figure out why they had each failed, from Chinese nasties to Honda inverter tech generators ..... I went out to try and fix one on site and I discovered why ..... a Honda 2kva generator, with a stick welder, two cement mixers, a toaster oven and water boiler, as well as a hammer drill and lights ..... "but the boss said they would all run of this generator, and he's an electrician, so he'd know" ....... So I rang the boss and asked him to verify .... why wouldn't they run of an inverter generator ...... the penny dropped, did they ask you if they would all run off the generator ..... a moments silences .... then, are you serious, are they trying to run all of them off the one generator ..... so I quoted what the leading hand told me while he had a smug look on his face like I didn't know crap ...... You were the expert ...... I'm not going to tell the leading hand you didn't explain it clearly, you are ..... then I hung up, got in the work ute and drove back to the workshop yard and pilled all the dead generators in the scrap bin ....

Had quite a few of them Jon, but none in my pocket when I watched the last of my tool storage areas burn to the ground .....

I can't justify spending $70 for something I'd rarely use now I'm no longer do this stuff for a living, or even $30 and wait a week for it to arrive on evilbay.
I'm thinking it's maybe a bit of gasket material or a piece of cable tie that had gone hard and broke up when I was doing the work the last time. There is just enough room between the spark plug metal base and the aluminium recess the plug drops into, for a thin walled sparkplug socket to drop into .... the top of the plug is recessed so far into the head it can't be touched with a finger tip .... if the plug falls out of the magnetic sparkplug socket .... it's time to stop for a coffee and a lit of deep breathes to calm down enough to figure out how to get it out .... there is not enough room to open a pair of long nose pliers enough to grab the tip .... even if you could see it ......

I might try a ball of blutak on a length of wire and go fishing in the hole tomorrow, before I butcher the sparkplug socket .....
