Dot, you are aware that bum breathing turtles really exist, aren't you?
Mary River catchment is in their habitat. They were the reason the Traveston Dam got knocked back a few years ago.

It would only help if their arse was out of the water, must be a qld thing ;)
The long neck tortoise hides it body in the reeds and just the tip of the nose breaks the surface of the water ..... I had a section of a storm water creek I used to breed them near my childhood home .... the little buggers got too clever for me to catch them after a while, so my sales to kids at school ended rather abruptly ..... I knew they were still there, they would devour the catch of small fish I was breeding to feed them within a day, but they would keep the water stirred up enough that it wasn't possible to see them easily ......

I've being trying to put up a link to those Qld bum breathing turtles, but I'm not having much luck.
I don't know much about these turtles that breath through their butt, but I have met a bunch of blokes that talk out of theirs.
Edit, thanks Ray. Fixed the spelling error.

Dave,
It’s “theirs”, not “there’s”.
The latter is a contraction of “there is”.

AI Overview
Did you know? Some turtles breathe out of their BUTTS! #AnimalFacts #LearnOnTikTok #Turtle #TikTokPartner
Some turtle species, like the Mary River turtle and the white-throated snapping turtle, are known for their ability to breathe through their anus, a process called cloacal respiration or "bum breathing". This adaptation allows them to absorb oxygen from the water while submerged, which is particularly useful during brumation (a form of dormancy similar to hibernation) or when they need to stay underwater for extended periods.
