I have used flat and then combined flat plus convex on each side of the MH and definitely prefer the combined ones.
Most important that they are properly aimed.
On drivers side the flat section is aimed so that you can just see the rear corner of the rig in the inside edge of the mirror. That means you can see well down the road behind in the rest of the mirror. The convex section should be aimed so that you can see the side of the rig down to the rear wheels and anything that is overtaking you. Similarly on the passenger side.
If you are putting on large replacement mirrors make very sure that they do not create a blind spot for the driver. On my rig the mirrors were mounted low down but because of the mounting arm and large mirror head (drivers side) I could not see vehicles coming towards me around a roundabout. I had to re-mount it up high with the head hanging downwards; LHSide one was not a problem.
Velvac are a very good mirror but horribly expensive, Britex have a similar head at a fraction of the price.
Best place to get one is at a truck accessories supplier.if they don't have anything suitable in stock they can get them in for you. At the same time consider getting foldable mirror arms.

Yes, Velvac are expensive alright but good mirrors, remote control and heated. I got them from the US but at $1,000 the pair. Haven't tried them on the road as yet but they are combined, flat and convex.

Thanks Barrie for that info and welcome to this place. Must have missed your intro?? why not do a bit about yourself in the "Introduce yourself" thread and maybe a pic of your set up?

Re: Flat Or Convexed Mirror??
Dot,
Most Oz cars have flat on driver's side & convex on passenger's side.
For me, that works fine, but Girt has Big Flat Ones (
No comment from me!
), so I added 2" 'eyeball' stick-on mirrors to both sides. The main mirrors are big enough that the 2" ones don't obscure anything.
I'm considering going for a bigger convex stick-on for the passenger side, as I've still been surprised by low sports cars on my left.
My recommendation: look for a set of "West-Coaster" mirrors in your local Super-Cheap Autos/Repco/whatever, and add a convex stick-on to at least the passenger side but preferably both.
The West Coasters are the ones with rectangular mirrors and a flattened-C-shaped frame which attaches top & bottom, then you can mount the mirrors as high or low as you want to keep your front quarter views.
