Terry I know you've been around engines & other mechanical things for many years but I'd seriously think about replacing that fan. I'm quite sure the manufacturers would have done much research into the cooling side of a motor & came up with what you're looking at. Having a fan that operates in sync with the speed of the water pump & therefore circulation seems to be a design feature.
I'll be attacking the engine bay on the Isuzu truck tomorrow so I'll see if there looks like a way that might ease your attack. I'd reckon they would be very similar hubs. Access is very good so I should get a good look at it.
I'm glad you got the gas out & I'm guessing you got some good advice from him as well?

and
I'm glad it's you and not me tackling this job ....... and he was very interested that the foundations and bolts where still there ready to stand new uprights ready to build another shed
Just about all petrol powered vehicles went from pump mounted mechanical fans to hydrostatic fans and then on to thermofans, the advantage is full air flow no matter what the engine rpm and even after the engine is turned off .... although this idea works best with electric water pumps as well, allows the hot spots in the head and block to cool with the need to leave the engine idling for ages after a long climb, as well as allowing the engine to fully warm up before the fans kick in ..... it can also pull air through the AC condenser and the trans cooler, even at idle ....
It also removes the forces the big fan places on the water pump bearing, that's a 24" fan that suddenly comes under load when the spring uncoils and lets the oil back into the drive assembly .....
Might even save a bit of fuel if the solar is powering the fans rather than the engine via the alternator .... I can also manually over ride the fan control for the long hill climbs where the engine might be only spinning at 1700rpm ....

This is on a V10 that you can access from the top https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4t_vJMg26k&t=2s
This is the front of the Winnie, above that black fuse box at the top of the photo is the underside of the dash, so no access from above
I wonder who might have one of those tools that go on an air chisel .... that certainly makes it look easy, but hard to justify buying one just for this job

Re: Our "New to Us" Winnie
Terry,
you could make one of those chisel spanners.
Cut an open ended spanner to length.
Drill a clevis hole.
Bolt a long shaft with a welded clevis to the spanner.
Fit to air chisel.
or buy one....

Re: Our "New to Us" Winnie
Cruel, very cruel .... the hex for the fan hub is 48mm, I could modify the Aliexpress unit, with free shipping, but then I need an air hammer as well. Started modifying one of the rather rusted Sidchrome open end spanners (ex workshop fire) to fit and use the manually operated hammer and see how that went, then my battery angle grinder gave up the ghost .... off the Bunning for a warranty claim .... no receipt naturally, we didn't buy it on the powerpass, no warranty claim
$200 later, because I bought an angle ratchet driver as well ....
Lunch time now, then back to the grinding ......
I measured up the twin cooling fans, ex Ford 4.0ltr cross flow, that are in the Big Bus radiators (2 radiators) and they will fit ...... if they could cool a 4 ltr Ford engine, 2 of them should be able to cool a 6.8 ltr engine ......
