Ummmm..... is that based on it still has teeth on itsupersparky wrote: ↑Sun Feb 01, 2026 8:04 pm That crown wheel looks to be in pretty good order Jon. What is the pinion like?
If the shoe is for size comparison, what size is it?
If the Bedford diff housing is anything like the one in Big Bus and all the SB series diff housings, someone in the machine shop stuffed up big time and machined too much off the rear bearing mount, resulting in the pinion going too deep into the crown wheel, the fix is big shims under the bearing cup and then a very thick packer gasket where to seal housing bolts on .....
It looks crazy the first time you do one, the gasket is the same thickness as the shim, so if you left the shims out, the seal plate would mount up without that crazy gasket that invites a leak ..... and the diff will last for a few thousand kms before it self-destructs ...
and don't do the quick and dirty pattern shift by changing the backlash .... that is just asking for carrier bearing failure or excessive axle spline wear and a snapped axle if you ever get caught in sand ..... that axle hop combined with too much backlash = snapped Bedford axle ...... I ended up fixing 26 of them when I was the mechanic at ACE Bus Services in Tassie ..... if it was possible to do it wrong, the mechanics there before me mastered the art
