Ideas for a trip around British Columbia CA.

Post by PandJ R away »

Pam and I are off in August for a 3 month trip to see our daughter in BC Canada.

I am hoping that some forum members have been over parts of our route and can provide advice and suggestions to flesh out our itinerary. Most of the resources I have been able to locate havn't been aimed at motorhoming at least our type of travel.

A part of the visit is at least two road trips in a cosy but self sufficient slide-on camper. The first trip will be for about a month starting in Lillooet going through Jasper, Prince George, MacKensie, Fort Nelson, Watson Lake, Whitehorse to Skagway and then down the coast by ferry to Prince Rupert, Williams Lake and back to the ranch near Lillooet. There has been no real work done on the second trip but it is likely to involve the wine growing areas.

We are experienced and like walking but are only going equipped for day walks. We like people, communities and cultures and prefer natural rather than built attractions,. We don't fish or hunt but like animals. Pam is desperately hoping to see a moose.

All suggestions appreciated

John, if you [have] access to the wonderer (sic), do a search on an article written regarding *Canadian motorhome travel - I think it was within the last twelve months or so.

dawg (or was that *Alaska  )

If you are going that far, the Queen Charlottes is an interesting experience....

Travelling solo a few years back I took the train right across Canada, stopping wherever I felt like it, so Jasper was good, up to Prince George, then on to Prince Rupert, ferry to Queen Charlotte, then inside passage....ferry not the posh one... to Vancouver island, lots of walking there....train a couple of times then across to Vancouver...
Went to a lot of tourist spots, but also a lot of non tourist area, where I could hike and take photographs to my hearts desire. I was in Canada for six weeks and would go back again tomorrow...but there's so much to see elsewhere in the world! I would definitely motorhome it another time. I was there when it was -30 degrees on occasion, but I love love loved it!

I saw lots of moose (meese?)....joke....also at Prince George, quite a few bears in the town....foraging for food in March. When hiking near Mount Washington I was warned the bears were waking up and might be a bit edgy, and other wild bitey creatures, but I didn't see any there! Great train journey to Victoria, but I think that mountain railway is now no more.

Have a really great time!

Cheers
Dee

Saw this one some time ago but as bush walking and bears were mentioned I thought I might add it ;)

Yea when I was on the train I met a gold miner....he was dripping in gold jewellery and had just given a talk on mining in Montreal. He also had some very nasty scars where he had been mauled by a bear while he was prospecting. I asked him what advice he would give if I came across a bear, and he said playing dead didn't work....run like hell he said! And pepper ....you need to be pretty close to the bear for that, and it just makes him more angry!

He said that for three days he was stalked by one bear, but fortunately he killed it before it got to him!
He always had a couple of guns with him....

One once even got into his tent! No, he wasn't having a gullible Aussie on! He did have an interesting story to tell, how his dad used to take him prospecting when he was a lad, but he then went and studied geology and he said its much easier to locate where there is a gold seam once you know your geology!

BC ferries are a great way to travel and very reasonably priced and don't miss seeing Vancouver Island.
