Camshaft a thing of the past?

Post by T1 Terry »

This is a short video on the progress of the computer controlled valve actuation system. It's taking a while longer than expected but this will be the answer to emmissions and alternate fuel problems of the future. The valve operation is no long restricted to a what can be achieved mechnically with camshafts and valve rockers etc, quite an interesting inovation for anyone interested in where the improvement to the combustion engine goes next

What a shame the production is so far away. With all the interest in emissions you would think there would be a push to fast track this effort. :(
Experience is a wonderful thing. It helps you recognise a mistake when repeated.

Change takes time, the first electronically controller diesel injection took more than 10 yrs to get from the drawing board to production and yet the first ones weren't very good, but the next generation was. The first steam engine was a poor performer, but the future generations sorted that to create a very powerful engine.
This new technology will appear, but it has to battle with electric vehicles now, possible a hybrid of the two creating a generator motor that will self adapt to any fuel and any load requirement, alter the valve timing to alter the length of the effective compression stroke to control precombustion no matter what engine speed and fuel is used making LNG a possible fuel of the future along with any byproduct fuel from other processing.
We are rapidly running out of oil, that will spur on increased research into alternative fuel use for the combustion engine in a desperate fight to hold off the electric vehicle taking over.
