If unaware, understanding the rational behind the 60% rule may just help.

From my understanding, the limit is designed to minimise the potential for the tail end of the turning vehicle to collect the vehicle (or curb side telegraph pole etc) next to you when negotiating a 90 degree turn. Any more and the overhang swings onto and into obstruction next to the turning vehicle. We've all seen commercial buses struggle negotiating turns, needing to use every bit of space available.

Yes I think that's the main reason for the rule. There may also be a reason for it to stop too much weight being loaded behind the rear axles and taking weight from the steer axle.

If you look at the RVs in the US you'd have to wonder about how many telegraph poles get hit over there :)
I also deleted the second one seeing as you stuttered
Bugger, I was hoping to get over the moderated post limit sooner :)

No probs, that's pretty standard for newbies on forums. I didn't notice the "has to be moderated" message the first time so clicked submit again.

Getting back to the origional question, Hitch Haul make a frame (flat) thats attaches to a standard 2" hitch. (towbar). I bought mine from the US, I have travelled extensivly with it and had 2 electric boosted bikes on it. Never once had any problems with authority. I also have a Fuso with high rear lights and a stick on number plate for the hitch haul. I bought one for my (departed) father in law. We cut it down and he carried a mobility scooter behind a Falcon sedan for years. I have recently seen the same articles advertised in the Wanderer and Caravan mags. Some enterprising soul is bringing them in and selling them. As a matter of fact I have mine for sale. Contact if you are interested. PS, on a 7M Fuso, if you squint, its OK with the 30% rubbish.

Hi all,
Generdawg's rationale sounds logical to me. But when you're nudging that 60% you still have to be careful.
Our 7.4m Explorer qualifies to wear the "Do not overtake turning vehicle" sticker.
When I had the rego transferred from NSW to Vic, the VicRoads lady ran a careful tape-measure over everything.
Her final comment as we re-entered the office to complete the paperwork was "If you remove your towball and gooseneck from the square hitch receiver, it comes within the overhang limit. I'll assume you've done that." ;)
But we still find clowns thinking it's safe to draw alongside on the left when we're turning right. Had at least two close shaves (notified by an indignant blast of horns from the left rear quadrant).
And that's not counting the umpteen dozen who have ignored the banner in black letters 4" high on reflective yellow which covers our entire rear bumper, with a repeat on the trailer :!:  Coming up on my right at roundabouts; trying to beat us around the right turn at traffic lights... I'm sure most of them can't read. Managed to trap one on the exit of a roundabout with a cutting & median strips... after the third roundabout where he tried to cut through on the inside & blasted me when I took both lanes to turn. Went back for a quiet chat to explain the significance of the "Do Not Overtake" stickers. As I was getting back in to drive on, he hooned past on the left, narrowly missing me, with left wheels half-way up the side of the cutting, spraying gravel everywhere. Whaddayado?
Regards & God bless,
Ray

EDIT: Oops, all the below assumes that a dash cam and/or rear cam rolling during the event. How did I miss that?

Get the rego number and go to the nearest cop shop for a *DVD video show and tell and just mention on the way out that you'll be sending a DVD copy to current affairs**.

dawg (* for the satisfaction, the DVD cost is peanuts really and just may make the roads safer. ** if it goes to air with the knowledge that the cop shop has a copy too, then there may red faces at the cop shop, if they get asked what the outcome was from higher up.)

As much as I hate Face Book, I'm thinking of starting something like "Do you know this *ick *ead and posting You tube clips to all the fools doing burn outs, damaging property, driving like a lunatic... if it were to catch on it might be as good as the speeding and small willie ad campaign
