creating POI's

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

creating POI's

Post by BruceS »

I was interested in how I can create my own list of places for my GPS.
I typed into Google "composing poi"

............... You wouldn't believe the result?

Hmmm.... it looked a bit crappy to me, not the sort of think you should be putting into your GPS. Remember, it's like computers, crap in equals crap out  Although the toilet locator would seem to fit the description given by Google, it really would be your friend then ;)

Depending on your GPS Bruce.
What I have done over the years I have traveled and been on forums is to save all the sites that were suggested or discussed and then I add them to a spreadsheet, and then if they matched the camps book I take out the gps co-ordinates and then add them to the spreadsheet called forums and that is added into the GPS.
Any good sites not in the camps I then try and find the co-ordinates and then add that to the file as well. This is done with google search, google maps etc as well as the old grape vine on the road give you god sites.
This gives me a file alongside the camps6 file so when I go past a site the two icons come up so I know it is a camps recommended site as well as I know someone has given a good report.
By the way I have the naughty file of towns as well to show when I enter a RV unfriendly town.
One of the thinks I like about the Garmin truck GPS is that all the messages show across the top in type that I can read instead of the silly little box on the normal GPS screens.
I have many files of stores I want to be able to find quickly like Aldi, Bunnings etc.
Any camps sites that I have in the forum file I highlight the site on the map as well as in the state listing so when I look at the list in camps I can see easily the friendly or good sites and the same on the maps. Any un-friendly town council get a red ring and no money.

I feel like a kid again hoping to trade valued possessions. Brian, I'll trade you my sites if you'll trade me yours.
