AMPERAGE CHOICE

Post by Kelvin12 »

G'Day All,

Just heard from a friend traveling in northern WA. He stayed at a c/park where he was asked if he wanted 4amps or 6amps power supply. I can't remember what one he went with but said there wasn't enough power to use an electric hotplate or micro wave let alone any air conditioner. I haven't heard of this one before. Seems a pretty low supply.

hah... that's a gem!!
Tell him to take the muffler off his genny and run it all night till they let him have 15A.
Some c/parks even let you use 30A (use two outlets).
Love to know where it is & if it's a proper caravan park or not.

You can't do much with 4A (960W) or 6A (1440W), most kettles etc are 2400W.

I hope they were not charging big $ for that

I would think they were generating their own ower & had to ration it out

No way you could use anything other than a fridge or two ,lights, Tv, a couple of fans & a few other LOW wattage items
Aircons, micro waves , hot plates ,kettles , electric hot water systems, definately OUT

The friend wasn't real impressed, all he said it was the last town in northern WA, heading north. Didn't mention the name of the town or c/park but he did say EVERYTHING on the northern WA coast was out of the ball park. Someone else also mentioned a very expensive park at Broome which was out in a dusty paddock from memory. I think that being the case maybe head inland a bit for stop overs well out of town/s.

Heard of parks charging double or extra for two inlets but this is the first for scroogy power. That was a subject discussed on the old CMHC forum a while back.

At Barn Hill (Northern WA Coast) you have a choice of sites and the price varies according to the "desirability" of said sites, and though they do have powered sites they have limited (I think 5a) power available, they are running from the station Genset and that is all there is there is. No complaints if you use a genny in the areas where they are permitted. A vast number of the visitors seem satisfied to accept the low powered option as those sites from memory were under the mango trees, and if all you want is to charge your batteries that is sufficient anyway.
I don't remember the prices now but from memory they were reasonable. If they weren't, I certainly would have remembered them (Broome was $55. a night minimum of three nights). We would thoroughly reccomend that if you are in that area, you do not go past Barn Hill, without a look.

We found on our recent trip that most parks were reasonable. Barn Hill, we used a generator site, but never ran the genny, as we were getting plenty off the solar anyway. 4 a wasn't worth it in our book. The Sunday roast was worth it too. We had friends went in with their camper trailer and hated it, but we would go back. Most expensive park was lake argyle at I think 42 a night. Any accommodation in Broome is expensive, but Broome Gateway is reasonable. The Broome mayor apparently owns at least one CP. You have been warned!

This is the sort of information we need to keep on file somewhere.

Definitely sounds like Barn Hill.

Prices are :
Unpowered sites $22
4Amp power $27
6 Amp power $30

You can only use the power for fridge, tv & battery charger ( http://www.barnhill.com.au/booking.html )

At Barn Hill you can camp in the "bush" area, no power but dunny/shower block (if you could call it that :)). This IMO is the best part of the place, it's cheaper and you get views over the ocean.

We seldom pay for accommodation but I think Barn Hill is worth it.
