Rapid Bay and the "seasoned" campers

Post by RussellB[SA] »

Well we did it, got out of the caravan park and stayed at a camp ground. At $6 per person per night with Toilets that were clean and security provided by manages and police when necessary its not quite a real camp site is it.

Image

The sites were free for all, no bookings, no power limited water (20 lites per 15mins), grass and easy access to the beach(fish and swim) and jetty (fish and dive). Limited TV (31 unstable channels) and low Cell signal (2 bars on average).

Over the four days we used 170 litres of water and one gas bottle (3.75kg). Leaving the BBQ on for 5 hours did not help gas consumption figures. It was cool and mostly sunny with Solar panels showing 14v during the day.

The morning voltage of the batteries was between 12.4 and 12.8v, my Battery monitor is bloody useless but the 2012 model has a more informative LCD display but no idea how reliable. Shows remaining time at particular usage level, so turn lots gadgets on and its says you have 20 hours left at this consumption rate etc. Must find me a decent battery monitor.

It was the Australia day weekend so the place was packed with families, very quite by 10pm when noise curfew kicks in. Dogs and generators (till 10pm) allowed but didn't hear either. No dump point available, cassetes emptied in toilets.

So, are you slowly converting to a freedom camper? How did it feel, better or worse than the caravan park experiences?

It was great, the main issue for us has always been security, the camp ground was secure and we had friends with us who want to do more fee/cheap camping in the future.

On the security front the caretakers take rego down when giving receipt, the police came after Christmas to show the flag and used one of those new gadgets to check regos (no stickers in SA) and found a stolen car (stolen with all camping gear) set up with occupants enjoying the Christmas break. 8 cop cars later with guns drawn the campers got a different type of holiday. It would have been fun to watch.

It was clean skies and soft breezes all the time we were there (no fires allowed gas only).

May I suggest you be careful in that camp site.
When I was there about two years ago there were some very naught brazen YOUNG foreigners that insisted on stripping and showering under those shower heads they have around the park.
As I sit out side all the time what could I do but just sit there and put up with it. Every day about 5 of the naughty things.
Some even came over later for a chat.
Nice drop off as you go down in  Good test for any exhaust brake setup.
Lovely view and a nice beach and they even put on fish in the water for the adventurous.
Did you check out the caves on the point ?

Bugger all being caught (said to be over 100 on Jetty on Saturday night (Australia Day), so didn't wet the line, too busy relaxing and watching the showers work like previously mentioned (they had their bathers on  )

a couple of years ago when we stayed there - we were right by the beach - and woke up in the morning looking at whales lollling around only 200 m out! Was awesome. Esme
