The Great Alpine Road.

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

Hi Everyone, we are planning a short 4 weeks away next March from Ballarat to Marlo, and thought we would go over the top on the Great Alpine Road, from Myrtleford to Bairnsdale, has anyone done this trip, we will be driving the D-Max and pulling a 20ft van, any information would be great . e.g. road condition, free camps, places of interest etc. Thanks.

Remember that song "Keep your mind on your driving, keep your hands on the wheel, keep your snoopy eyes on the road ahead"? well that is that road. A good one as long as no snow or cloud cover and you watch out for the buses & logging trucks. You'll be fine it's a good road NOW. I did that road in 1976 (part of it that is, it wasn't safe to continue) :D

Hi Ros, haven't travelled that road for a while but have always loved it, some great camping spots along the road,One on the river just out of Bright was a beauty, (Porpunkah I think) another not to miss is Victoria Falls Historic area out of Omeo. the main thing to look out for on that road was the timber trucks, they travel it like they own it, but usually they call on ch 40, when they are working an area.

Thanks everyone, we have been to Marlo heaps as I have family down and also lived at Newmerella as a child, this is a great part of the country we are really looking forward to going over the top to get there as we have not been on this road since it was sealed ... Sounds like it is doable with our van...

Dee there are a few great camping spots along the Orbost to Marlo road, a great little trip is on the Curlip paddle steamer out from Marlo just need to check what day she is going out, I have been lucky enough to work on her, good free camp at Genoa, Cape Conran is a good day trip but would be hard to camp if you have a big rig, more suited to camper trailer etc. and the Trestle Bridge at Nowa Nowa is well worth a trip our to see.
